What IT Majors Are There?

Young people in Vietnam today are absorbed in new technologies and have ambitions to become Information Technology experts. There are many different IT majors to choose from, each with their own knowledge requirements, unique features and links to a variety of professional fields.

 

We will examine the several IT majors offered at DTU, to enable students to make the right choices when applying to study IT in Central Vietnam.

 

IT majors at DTU

 

Since its inception, DTU has always aimed to become an electronic university. For twenty years, the university has pursued its mission to educate a strong technological workforce. It has now become one of the top Vietnamese universities, measured by the percentage of graduates finding immediate employment.

 

DTU has been invested in modern equipment and facilities to provide the ideal environment for graduating a highly-qualified workforce, by developing advanced programs in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, one of the leading American IT institutions. This guarantees a broader, international-standardized education, leading to potential careers with local or international companies. The DTU IT majors are Network Engineering, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems, Graphic Design/Game/Multimedia and Big Data & Machine Learning.

- Network Engineering

 

DTU founded the Network Engineering major with the aim of teaching network administrators how to design and create networks to meet advanced business requirements. Graduates acquire an in-depth knowledge of network management, network services, network security practices, network design and wireless networks. They design networks, identify and solve problems in network management, network security, connectivity, database storage and information backup systems.

- Software Engineering

 

Software Engineering has become more important than ever before. All applications on mobile phones and computers applications are designed and produced by software engineers.

 

Graduates will create, modify and develop software applications using programming tools, analyze and assess project requirements and propose solutions, using new technologies or existing off-the-shelf software tools and components to develop projects based on specific customer requirements. They will design, create, operate, maintain and develop information systems for government agencies, schools, businesses and so on.

- Management Information Systems

 

The Management Information Systems major combines hardware, software and communications network technology to gather, create, and distribute databases in companies. This involves designing, managing and operating information systems, analyzing data, facilitating communications between user departments and IT specialists, in order to make business operations more efficient and competitive.

 

Students learn how to analyze, design, create, deploy, manage and control management information systems. At the same time, they will understand how to apply economic theory to propose optimized business management plans and process, analyze and exploit big data. They will mine data, improve and ensure data security and make economic, financial, accounting, management and banking forecasts, facilitating decision-making in business operations, management, production, investment, marketing and so on.

 

Management Information Systems graduates find careers as:

  • IT experts in local and foreign companies, government agencies and research centers

- Big Data & Machine Learning

 

Businesses require experts to propose the most efficient ways of processing large quantities of data. Big data technology has enabled companies to access and store large quantities of information to collect and process data to formulate business strategies rapidly, enabling them to generate higher profits.

 

Students of this major are taught programming skills and how to analyze and manipulate data for marketing purposes. They can also become data scientists, integrating big data into all departments of a business.

With their advanced database and algorithmic skills, Big Data & Machine Learning graduates have excellent career prospects in Software Engineering or Information Systems in companies that gather and analyze data, such as advertising companies, with good chances of promotion and a stable work environment.

With their ability to generalize data and advanced algorithms, Bachelors of Big Data & Machine Learning will have plenty of job opportunities. Graduates of this major can work in all jobs Bachelors of Software Engineering or of Information Systems can do at software companies, companies gathering and analyzing data, and online advertisement corporations, with high chances for promotion and a good work environment.

 

- Graphic Design/Game/Multimedia

 

This an applied arts major, meaning you will flexibly use graphic tools and software to turn a creative idea of yours into a product, an image transmitting some message to the viewer in a unique and impressive way. From this, you can design images and characters for animated movies and games and create other multimedia products.

To be successful in this major, it is important to be creative. Concerning professional skills, students are provided with knowledge on basic arts, design methods, how to use information technology in graphic design, and graphic development trends; the skills to use advanced graphic software to design logos, websites, games, movies, and mobile phone applications; and the ability to combine design with media, fine arts, and commerce to create a product meeting the requirements of today’s industrial, creative, and entertainment standards.

 

Attractive employment opportunities after graduating in Graphic Design:

 

+ Consultant or designer at advertisement, design, or media companies, at event organizers, arts studios, editorial offices, publishers, televisions, journals, and so on.

+ Freelance designer

+ Consultant or lecturer at schools, centers, or clubs in graphic design.

DTU does not have major-specific enrollment criteria. Enrollment targets for all DTU majors are 5,500 students.

In 2020, DTU continues to award preferential scholarships in IT

 

-  700 scholarships worth from 500,000 to 2 million dong, for applicants with high school transcript scores of 22 or above, including IT applicants;

 

- 720 scholarships worth from one to five million dong each, for applicants with total High Graduation Exam three-subject scores of three to ten points higher than the admissions minimum, including IT applicants. 

 

- A 10% reduction in first-year tuition fees for 50 applicants in Embedded Systems;

 

- Students from Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa will each be awarded 1 million dong if they enroll in Embedded Systems and Graphic Design; 

 

- Fifteen scholarships from Boeing (US) worth 20 million dong each for applicants to the advanced and international CMU programs 

  

- Ten scholarships, 5 million dong each, to applicants of Advanced CMU program.

 

- Full scholarships: (100% of tuition fee, 5 scholarships/major) for applicants to the advanced and international CMU program, with a total High School Graduation Exam three-subject score of 22.5 or above.
