“This is the fifth year DTU organizes the Building a Bridge across the Milky Way competition to offer a useful playground for students to develop their creativity,” Dr Nguyen The Duong, Dean of DTU Faculty of Civil Engineering, explains. “After five years, the contest has not yet lost its appeal, and a great many young people continue supporting it. This in part confirms that the prestige, quality, and practical usefulness of the contest meet the needs of students interested in construction and architecture. I hope it will allow them to fully develop their creativity and kindle their passion for architecture and construction.”

Using disposable chopsticks, glue, rulers, paper knives, and small saw blades, contestants had only 3 hours to design model bridges able to carry up to 100 kilos. Projects were judged on design, loading capacity and forecast.

To ensure fairness between university and high school students, the organizers awarded separate prizes for each group. As such, among DTU students, the Vua Ruou Gao team of class K23XDD3 won a first prize, the Chivas team of class K22XDC a second prize, the Vuot Doc team of class XDDCSU a third prize, and the K22XDD1 team of class K22XDD1, third prize, and the K22XDD1 team of class K22XDD1, the K23XDD2 team of class K23XDD2, and the XDQ team of class K23XDQ were awarded consolation prizes.

For the high school students, the organizers decided to award a first prize to the Khong Gay Phat Lao team from Phan Chau Trinh high school, second and third prizes to the Anh Hung Ganh Het team and the Ba Ha Khong Biet Gi Het team, both from Le Quy Don High school for the Gifted. Three consolation prizes were furthermore awarded to the LQÐERS team, the PCTKEY team, and the The Brainy Fools team from Le Quy Don High school for the Gifted and Phan Chau Trinh high school.

“The contest was a bit more difficult this year, as the amount of materials to be used was reduced to protect the environment,” Tran Dinh Duy, a Phan Chau Trinh high school student of class 12/2 and winner of the first prize among high school students, explained excitedly. “At first we worried a little, but once we got started, we all did our utmost to obtain the best possible result. Not only does the Building a Bridge across the Milky Way competition offer us an opportunity to exchange with and learn from university students and high school students our age, but it also allows us to develop our creativity. We hope that DTU will continue to offer us this opportunity to participate and demonstrate our abilities.”
