A DTU Nursing Post-Graduate works as Chief Nurse in the Hoan My Hospital Emergency Department

After graduating summa cum laude in Nursing from DTU, Nguyen Tien Dung worked non-stop, rapidly gaining the trust of the Hoan My hospital in Danang. He soon became Chief Nurse of the Emergency Department and Chairman of the hospital Union, but decided to sign up for a Master’s degree in Nursing, offered jointly by DTU and Fooyin University in Taiwan. He is now completing the course magna cum laude, and, with the respect gained from his colleagues and patients, has become role model for his colleagues in their studies and work.

Continually learning more about patient healthcare

Nguyen Tien Dung was born and raised in the poor Thanh Huong commune, in the Thang Chuong district of Nghe An province, and cherished the dream of becoming a nurse. He saw how his local healthcare services were plagued with difficulties, severely impacting people’s health. Nguyen Tien Dung enrolled in a vocational high school and was recruited by the Hoan My hospital in Danang on graduation. The hospital is part of the Hoan My Medical Corporation’s advanced healthcare network and is highly regarded in Danang and surrounding areas.

Eager to gain more specialized knowledge to perform even better, Nguyen Tien Dung continued his studies at DTU to obtain a Bachelor of Nursing degree in 2014. He explains: “I was very lucky that the Hoan My hospital always allowed me to work and study simultaneously. DTU uses a credit-based system, giving me the flexibility to adapt my schedule to practical requirements. However, my classmates and I always had to ensure we didn’t miss anything in our studies or work.”

Dynamic, sociable, and diligent, Nguyen Tien Dung was chosen Class President by his lecturers and classmates. His hospital work kept him busy, but he never slacked in his studies. He was extremely conscientious caring for his patients, but, at the same time, he was an enthusiastic student and one of the top performers in the Faculty of Nursing. Dung said: “I heard about DTU when I was still at high school and when started working in Danang, I heard many good things about the quality of education there. After some careful research, I decided to apply to DTU. After four years, I still believe that was my best choice ever. The university’s excellent high-quality training programs ensure that students are provided with a specialized education and appropriate professional skills. At DTU, I could study with expert lecturers, such as Associate Professor Nguyen Ngoc Minh and Dr. Nguyen Huynh Ngoc. I was also able to engage in several research projects during the preparation of my thesis, which provided a solid foundation for my future achievements.”

Many study and work achievements

Hoan My hospital made Nguyen Tien Dung a Team Trainer in 2014. From 2015 to 2017, he attended nursing management and pedagogical medicine courses and others. During that time, his many achievements gained recognition through a Certificate of Merit from the Department of Health, and from the medical Union of Danang, the Vietnamese medical Union Executive Committee, and he was invited to speak at the 2016 Science Conference in Ho Chi Minh City.

The knowledge he gained at DTU also helped Nguyen Tien Dung to realize many advanced research projects and to become a speaker at other national conferences, such as the Expanded Scientific Research Conference in Dalat in 2015, and conferences held by the Hoan My Corporation in Ho Chi Minh City in 2015 and Danang in 2016. In 2015 and 2017, he won first prize in Hoan My nursing contests and Dung’s expertise, competence and hard work at the hospital resulted in his promotion to Chief Nurse of the Emergency Department and Chairman of the hospital Union in 2017.

Nguyen Tien Dung decided to continue with postgraduate studies in 2018 and chose the international Master’s in Nursing degree course, offered by DTU in collaboration with Fooyin University in Taiwan. Dung explains: “For me, studying is primarily self-enrichment to live and work better, so that our children and future generations can admire us as an examples and be motivated to work harder. I experienced a remarkable initial four years of education at DTU, which is why I didn’t hesitate to enroll in their Master’s degree program. Most of the subjects are taught in English, by senior lecturers from Fooyin University, so my level is already quite high. During the course, we all spend a short time at Fooyin University to meet our foreign partners and complete certain subjects.

Nguyen Tien Dung says: “At the Hoan My hospital, we have a many DTU students doing internships and part-time work and, as their manager, I highly appreciate their skills. We share the same DTU background and are happy to meet and work together at the hospital. Some started working there earlier, some later, but we all support each other and work together to care for our patients. The knowledge and skills we acquired in the classroom can be put into practice to save lives and ease pain.”
