A total of seven Vietnamese universities are listed in the Impact Rankings 2022, recently released by the U.K. magazine Times Higher Education (THE). The THE Impact Rankings is the only global performance ranking that assesses universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ranking of Vietnamese universities in THE Impact Rankings 2022
The THE Impact Rankings 2022 marks the fourth year that Times Higher Education has released the ranking assessing universities against the 17 United Nations SDGs, which call for global action to build a peaceful and prosperous society since it measures the contributions of educational institutions on social development and environmental protection.
Duy Tan University, Hanoi University of Science and Technology, National Economics University, Ton Duc Thang University, and Vietnam National University Hanoi are in the 601-800 group while Phenikaa University and FPT University rank in the 801-1000 group.
In 2021, only four Vietnamese education institutions were on the list. The three new institutions that are on this year’s list are Duy Tan University, National Economics University and FPT University.

All of the seven Vietnamese universities received high rankings for the 8th SDG: “Economic growth and decent work for all” and the 17th SDG: “Partnerships for the goals”.
In Southeast Asia, Thailand has 51 schools ranked, followed by Indonesia with 28, Malaysia 23, the Philippines 15, Vietnam 7 and Cambodia 1.
The 2022 Impact Rankings includes 1,406 universities from 106 different countries and territories, up from 1,117 institutions from 94 countries and territories last year. The overall ranking is led by the Western Sydney University in Australia.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance raking to assess universities against the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are: No poverty; Zero hunger; Good health and well-being; Quality education; Gender equality; Clean water and sanitation; Affordable and clean energy; Decent work and economic growth; Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Reduced inequalities; Sustainable cities and communities; Responsible consumption and production; Climate action; Life below water; Life on land; Peace, justice and strong institutions and Partnerships for the goals.
A university’s final score in the overall table is calculated by combining its score in SDG number 17, the only compulsory SDG for inclusion in the overall table, with the top three scores in the remaining 16 SDGs. SDG number 17 accounts for 22 per cent of the overall score, while the other SDGs each carry a weighting of 26 per cent.
