Health Science Education at DTU in 2019

As a country develops, there is a much greater need for health care. With demand currently exceeding supply, the shortage of qualified health care workers remarkably affects the healthcare services.

Having been offering education in the health sciences for ten years, DTU has gradually gained prestige in training skilled health care workers to fill the gaps in human resources in the Central region. So what are the factors leading to great success in the education of the Health Science at DTU?

International collaboration to improve the quality of education

Health Science majors at DTU include:

• General Practitioner
• Pharmacology
• General Nursing
• Odonto-Stomatology (new major opened in 2018).

DTU has certainly set down specific achievements on the diplomatic front with its collaborations with prestigious and leading universities in almost all majors, to transfer curriculums, renovate teaching and studying methods, improve training facilities, and train skilled and dynamic students with modern thinking.

The University has partnered with the University of Pittsburgh, ranking fifth among the top 15 of leading universities in medical research in the US to improve its education quality;  the University of Illinois in Chicago, which offers the largest medical and pharmaceutical programs in the US; Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore; Ben Gurion University of the Negev in Israel; Burapha, Khon Kaen University,  and Mahidol University in Thailand; Sun-Moon University and Dong-A University in South Korea, the Seirei Social Welfare Community in Japan and the local Kinki branch of the Japanese National Council for the Elderly and Blind.

In addition, DTU partnered with 18 local hospitals, where students work with experienced medical staff and practice with patients. These include the Danang Hospital, the Danang C Hospital, the 17th Military Zone Hospital, the 199th Hospital of the Ministry of Public Security, Hue Central Hospital, the Danang Odonto-Stomatology Center and others.

Well-equipped laboratories

DTU focuses on teaching advanced Health Science programs to graduate highly-qualified doctors, odonto-stomatologists, pharmacists and nurses. Special classrooms are fully equipped with lifelike dummies to practice diagnosis and treatment before working in a real hospital, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Pathophysiology, Immunology, Microbiology, Parasite and Nursing laboratories. All meet the necessary safety standards and are equipped with the most advanced equipment.

Particularly, students can also practice with virtual patients in the MedSim studios being built on the Hoa Khanh Nam campus with a total investment of 200 billion dong.

DTU has also created the Center of Visualization & Simulation - CVS, which employs 3D virtual reality applications to modernize teaching methods and improve medical education. The center created the “3D Virtual Reality Application for the Human body for use in Health Sciences Teaching, Training, and Research”, which won first prize at the 2017 Vietnamese Talent Awards and is highly regarded for its contribution to the teaching of medicine. Overall, 3,924 different simulations have been developed to exactly model various human Vietnamese anatomical characteristics.

Adopting advanced teaching methods

DTU adopted the PBL teaching method in the Health Sciences several years ago.  PBL is an advanced training method applied in the life sciences and health sciences at many of the world's leading universities. It is a learner-centered approach which empowers students to conduct research and integrate theory and practice. Learning with PBL helps students to activate the knowledge gained to solve problems in context and proactively explore new fields of knowledge after graduation.

Broadening oversea study opportunities for lecturers and students

DTU strives to work with foreign partners to provide students and lecturers with opportunities to get further education. A great many of the DTU Nursing lecturers and students have gone to Japan, Taiwan, and Sweden for studies and Master’s degrees. As an example, Pham Thi Ngoc An,  a lecturer of the DTU Faculty of Nursing; and Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang, a DTU alumnus who was granted full academic scholarships for 2 years, successfully defended their PhD dissertations in Nursing at China Medical University in June, 2018

On October 27, 2018, DTU signed an agreement with the SEIREI, to work together on a Nursing program combining education, career orientation and employment, in order to graduate qualified professionals to meet the increasing international healthcare demands.  On this occasion, Seirei awarded two scholarships to Doan Nu Nga My, a DTU Nursing lecturer, and Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, a DTU alumna, to study in Japan starting from April 2019. After graduation, both of them will work at Seirei hospitals and healthcare facilities for four and a half years, earning an average annual income of 3.2 million Japanese yen, which is the equivalent to 632 million dong.

In 2019, DTU awards the following scholarships to Health Sciences  applicants:

- DTU scholarships worth 1 to 5 million dong for applicants in Nursing major with a High School Graduation Exam three-course grade average three points higher than the minimal admissions grade.
- Students from Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Ha Tinh, Nghe An and Thanh Hoa will each be awarded 1 million dong when they enroll in Nursing major.
