Final of the “I Am a Tour Guide” Competition

On April 15th, the DTU Faculty of Tourism & Hospitality held the finals of the “I Am a Tour Guide” contest, which was part of the 2017 Danang Hospitality & Tourism Career Fair, organized by DTU and the Danang Department of Tourism. The objective was to identify potential Tour Guides for local companies to promote tourist attractions in Danang and nationwide.

From the 65 applicants, 25 were selected for the preliminary round on March 25th and 26th to demonstrate their Tour Guide skills, using a video or PowerPoint presentation. Then they had to answer two questions on the responsibilities of a Tour Guide, and on local economics, culture, society, history and nature. They also had to deal with a special situation selected by the jury and the ten best contestants were selected to advance to the finals.

 
The winning Tour Guides receive valuable prizes

In the finals, the ten contestants took part in a speaking contest, drawing lots to determine their topics, which included famous tourist spots and their attraction, and questions on Vietnamese culture, history, and tradition. The contestants were also asked to show their ability to entertain tourists with songs, games, storytelling, quizzes and other activities.

The DTU students confidently displayed their ability and potential as future Tour Guides. They demonstrated the basic skills of presenting in front of an audience, communicating, observing and rapidly dealing with unexpected situations, acquired during their studies and practice. 

The jury awarded valuable prizes to the top Tour Guides. Nguyen Van Chuan, from K20 DLL2, won first prize, a trip to another ASEAN country, offered by Duy Tan Travel, worth 5 million vnd. The second prize of 2 million vnd went to Phan Le Thi Thuy Ly, from K20 DLL2, and a third prize of 1 million vnd to Nguyen Thi Minh Anh, also from K20 DLL2. 

“Although I did not sign up for the contest, I still felt immensely inspired and excited seeing how my colleagues competed live on the stage,” said Pham Thi Kim Hong, from K22 DLL1.“I learned a lot about famous local travel destinations and could meet professional Tour Guides working for companies like Saigontourist, Vietravel and Vietnam TravelMART. The contest helped me understand more about my future career and I know appreciate it better.”
