Inspiring Faculty of English Students for Scientific Research

On October 10, 2026, the student scientific research conference “Connecting Knowledge, Inspiring Vision: Scientific research with students of the Faculty of English” was successfully held at Duy Tan University (DTU). It attracted a large number of students with an interest in scientific research. The conference, organized by the Faculty of English of the DTU School of Languages, Humanities, & Social Sciences (LHSS), provided practical insights into the role of scientific research and suggested approaches to knowledge exploration, the development of research topics, and the use of AI in research.

“Scientific research is a transition from knowledge acquisition to exploring and creating knowledge,” Dr. Nguyen Thi Minh Hanh, acting Dean of the Faculty of English, emphasized at the conference. “In today’s world, classroom knowledge provides a basic foundation. Students should continue to ask questions, analyze, verify, and seek solutions to real-world problems, and so actively develop their own capabilities. Scientific research thus becomes a bridge between theory and practice, giving students a deeper understanding of the knowledge in their fields.”

Building on this, the seminar suggested research topics closely related to and relevant for the English majors, such as investigating the use of business English in restaurants, hotels, and businesses, or applying technology to translation and interpreting. Accordingly, a question about language use, an effective learning method, or any situation encountered in studying, working, or daily life can serve as the starting point for a suitable scientific research project.

The conference attracted a large number of students interested in scientific research

In addition to developing ideas, the event addressed the skills students need to cultivate during their research, including critical thinking, analytical abilities, and independent learning. Testing hypotheses and comparing findings with initial assumptions help students evaluate issues based on data while proactively adjusting their approaches.

The conference also featured a presentation by Nguyen Thanh Dat, a student at the Faculty of English who has set down notable achievements in scientific research in educational technology (EdTech). His project “Applying digital storytelling to enhance interest and listening & speaking skills among preschool children” won third prize at DTU’s 2026 Student Scientific Research Conference.

The conference sparked students’ curiosity and brought scientific research closer to their academic studies

Aiming to innovate approaches to language learning for preschool children, the project provides a concrete example of how specialized knowledge can be combined with technology to address practical educational needs. Dat’s engaging presentation at the conference inspired other students and encouraged them to confidently develop their own ideas and participate in scientific research.

Another topic that attracted interest was the use of AI in research. The speakers introduced tools such as Elicit, Consensus, and Google NotebookLM for searching for and synthesizing scientific papers and extracting information from documents. Alongside the use of these tools, students should read themselves, get a full and in-depth understanding of issues, and remain actively involved in analyzing and evaluating information.

With strong participation from students, the conference sparked curiosity and brought scientific research closer to academic studies. The message “Connecting Knowledge, Inspiring Vision” came to life through relatable insights that motivated the students to confidently begin their research journeys, affirm their abilities, and comprehensively develop in the modern era.
