Software Freedom Day (SFD) is an annual international celebration to commemorate the availabilty of free software. The event is held on the third Saturday of September and was first launched in 2004 as a public education initiative. The Day aims to increase awareness of the availability of free software, its benefits and applications and has been held in Vietnam since 2012, under the Chairmanship of the Vietnam Free and Open-Source Software Club (VFOSSA), with support from various ministries and businesses.

This year's SFD targets GenZ students and the story of young entrepreneurs in the context of the 4.0 industrial revolution.

Dr. Anand Nayyar

At the Da Nang bridge point, DTU gave two impressive presentations of great interest to younger people:

- “Top Free Open Source IoT Frameworks in 2023”, by Dr. Anand Nayyar from the DTU School of Computer Science
- “The Camunda App in Health-Tech,” by Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, a software development expert from the KMS company

In his presentation, Dr. Anand Nayyar provided students with a clearer perspective on IoT, the importance of IoT frameworks and why we need open source IoT frameworks. The framework of IoT typically includes a combination of Hardware, Software, Networking elements (IoT protocols), Device management, Security, Data management, Application development and Cloud-based platforms. These components work together to enable the seamless integration of IoT devices and systems. The open-source platform is a solution to solve the difficulties of consumers, business agents, and IoT developers, on a large scale with high flexibility. Most open source IoT platforms are free and can be easily installed.

In addition, Mr. Nguyen Van Dung discussed the Camunda application in health care technology, which includes an integrated hospital management, clinical data management and automated testing and analyzing systems. Speakers from DTU, PHENIKAA University and HUFLIT contributed to the success of the event and it was an excellent opportunity for students and the community to grasp the benefits of free and open-source software, while contributing to the development and advancement of the IT sector in Vietnam.
