This is the fifth year the THE Impact Rankings 2023 has exclusively ranked universities according to the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which measure educational institutions globally on their social development and environmental protection performance. The objective is to build a peaceful and prosperous society worldwide.

The SDG performance criteria are: No poverty; Zero hunger; Good health and well-being; Quality education; Gender equality; Clean water and sanitation; Affordable and clean energy; Decent work and economic growth; Industry, innovation and infrastructure; Reduced inequalities; Sustainable cities and communities; Responsible consumption and production; Climate action; Life below water; Life on land; Peace and justice; Strong institutions; and Partnerships.

The final score in the overall table is calculated by combining the 17th SDG score, for partnerships, the only compulsory SDG for inclusion, with the top three scores in the remaining 16 SDGs. So partnerships account for 22% of the total score, while the other SDGs each carry a weighting of 26%. In each SDG, points are calculated based on research, stewardship, outreach, and teaching.
