The 2023 Top 100 Vietnamese Universities by Subject

Vietnamese universities were featured in three of the broad subject areas and fifteen disciplines, including: Engineering & Technology, Natural Science and Social Science & Management. The rankings are portrayed in the following Infographic:

Two Vietnamese universities were ranked by QS in the top 100 worldwide in their subject areas. DTU in the 51-100 range for the first time, in Hospitality & Leisure Management, and Vietnam National University in the same range for their Engineering Petroleum program.

Vietnam was also placed in the top 300 in two other majors, DTU at 201-230, in Civil Engineering & Structural Engineering, and Ton Duc Thang University, at 251-300, in Mathematics.

The Vietnam National University in HCMC had seven subjects ranked, followed by VNU Hanoi and Duy Tan University, with six each. Meanwhile, the University of Economics in HCMC and Can Tho University were both ranked once, in Economics & Econometrics and in Agriculture & Forestry respectively, which reflected their traditional and regional strengths, similar to DTU’s ranking in Hospitality & Leisure Management, deriving from Danang’s strength in tourism.

Certain universities also highlighted clear interdisciplinary strength, such as the VNU in HCMC, which excels in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, Petroleum Engineering and Environmental Science, and the Hanoi University of Science & Technology, which also scores well in Mathematics, Computer Science & Information Systems, Electrical Engineering & Electronics and Mechanical Engineering. However, no Vietnamese institution is yet to be ranked in Biological Sciences, in the basic natural sciences area of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Also, no Vietnamese university was ranked in the broad subject areas of Life Sciences & Medicine, although Can Tho University was ranked in Agriculture & Forestry and DTU in Medicine, but none in the Arts & Humanities broad subject area.

The five criteria that determine the QS World University rankings are: Academic Reputation; Employer Reputation; Research Citations per Paper; the H-index; and International Research Networking.
