Two Students Create App to Try on Clothes Without Touching and Avoid Online Purchase Blunders

A project to “try on clothes without touching” by two third-year students won first prize at the “Hackathon 2022 - Hack the Future” contest.
The “Hackathon 2022 - Hack the Future” contest, aimed at students of IT or of majors related to economics, business administration, and social sciences and the like, recently took place in Danang (on August 13 and 14).
One of the projects that attracted interest for being practical and for their presentation is the “system to try on clothes without touching” by the two third-year students Nguyen Vinh Huy and Vo Thanh Hau from DTU.
Project leader for the “system to try on clothes without touching” Nguyen Vinh Huy explains they had been thinking of the project for quite a while and that it would easily inform consumers of the characteristics of clothes without requiring a visit to the shop.

“During the Covid-19 pandemic, a huge many people bought stuff, and especially clothes, online,” Huy explains. “People were often careless and received different goods from what they thought they had seen online. This gave us the idea of ‘trying on clothes without touching’.
“Our group wanted to remove the limitations of trying on clothes the traditional way and of the exchange of clothes on e-commerce platforms.”
Huy explains they will use the OpenPose + LIP_JPPNet system to take measures. The system recognizes certain points on the body - like arm and leg joints - to accurately sketch a person’s body shape.

The data of the clothes chosen by the consumer are then entered into the system, which shows whether the clothes really fit before one decides to click ‘choose’ or ‘buy’.
“Besides this project, our group are planning to research another system to suggest products and the development of a chatbot,” Huy says, “to integrate into e-commerce platforms, and to apply more new technologies to improve the model’s accuracy and to bring the images closer to real life.”
Huy admits that they are not yet satisfied with the interface for their project, and also with the limitations imposed by their lack of data, leaving the accuracy of the model below their expectations.

“As we’re still students, our economic resources are insufficient to implement the product and we lack the resources to apply the technology using new techniques,” Huy says. “Our objective with this project is therefore to attract investors to realize it and to resolve the remaining flaws.”
The subject of the “Hackathon 2022 - Hack the Future” contest was to solve an issue or difficulty of businesses or local authorities in Central Vietnam. The competing ideas and products had to contain a technology factor and solve an issue businesses or local authorities actually have.
Ten teams were selected for the final round. Besides the first prize for the EnerG team with their graph neural network and computer vision app for the creation of a “system to try on clothes without touching” on e-commerce platforms, a second prize fell to the Vn.nV team with the ChoIk project to help small shopkeepers adapt to current conditions, and a third prize was awarded to the Coachi team with their app to book tickets for and manage long-distance coaches.
