Talk Show on “Parametric Design and Technology in Architecture”

On December 9, a talk show entitled “Parametric Design and Technology in Architecture” took place at DTU. The speakers were M.Arch. Nguyen Xuan Man, the Hanoi Chief Representative for LAVA architecture, and Architect Nguyen Trong Thuy, Director of the Attractor Architecture company in Ho Chi Minh city. The talk show was one of a series of events at the 12th National Festival for Architecture Students at DTU.

The world has just started to recognize the new trend of parametric architecture, which has already contributed to the design of impressive and alluring new buildings in urban areas, with quite different and more interesting characteristics. Many big names in architecture have adopted the principles of parametric design and, with the latest advances in science and technology, Vietnamese architects are now joining them.

The speakers talked extensively about parametric architecture, where the design objectives of cities or buildings are not static and the internal and external objectives are flexible but controlled by a set of input parameters. Architects use computers in their design, using parameters of size, number, distance and height to balance spatial geometry. The elements are usually simple shapes, like triangles, circles, honeycombs, arbitrary nets or squares.

Using a computer and specific algorithms, the blocks in the design are continuously deformed, and the architect can choose the final design and optimal construction alternatives. Digital technology has been widely applied to design buildings with complicated shapes and structures, all on a computer, by using 3D tools for brainstorming. Then specific “module” or “pattern” ideas evolve and can be reused and shared.

M.Arch. Nguyen Xuan Man and Architect Nguyen Trong Thuy explained further about the key components to enable easy application, how to replace traditional design, and how parametrically designed building projects can be developed in Vietnam.

After the talk show, the 3rd Dream Home Design contest (2020 - 2021) was held based on the topic “Personal Touch in Living Space”, originally launched in 2017 by the Architecture Magazine of the Vietnam Association of Architects, the Vietnam Young Architects Club and Thach Ban Group, Dream Home Design, which has become an annual contest aimed sharing unique ideas home design and much enjoyed by all.
