On January 26, ten disabled people were donated electric wheelchairs worth 15 million dong each. The wheelchairs were the result of a DTU research project by lecturers and students, who designed and built them to provide the handicapped with an alternative means of convenient transport. The intention was to improve their psychological wellbeing and efforts to succeed in their lives.
“Our Robotica group from the DTU Center of Electrical Engineering (CEE) saw many small disabled children, with great difficulties in their everyday activities, so we started a project “Robotic arms for the disabled”, explained DTU Provost, Dr. Le Nguyen Bao. “In March, 2017, after four months of research and design, two “robotic” arms were fitted on two primary school children, Phan Trong Hieu and Tran Dang Khoa, from Quang Nam province.”
Building on this success, DTU continued their research with a project “A motorized wheelchair concept for the disabled”, led by a post-graduate Dang Ngoc Trung, and an electric wheelchair was produced for the handicapped.
The practical and humanitarian project was approved by the Scientific Council for its unique technology. The battery-powered wheelchair normally runs at speeds from 35 to 40 km/h, with a maximum of 45 km/h. They are small and flexible and can be used at home, for long-distance travel, in crowded shopping malls and in traffic. The simple and convenient wheelchair can be easily tailored to the owner and is delivered in two sections that can be joined together by the user at any time, in any situation. The motor can be detached when only a simple wheelchair is required and later quickly fitted on for improved mobility. The wheelchairs have undergone extensive testing and guaranteed to be safe.
