Always looking for opportunities to build confidence

The eldest child of three in a farming family, Kim Ngan wanted to set an example to her siblings and please her parents. However, her shyness limited her ability and intellect and she never dared challenge herself in any way.

“Since I was a child, I have been shy, avoiding social contact, anxious in noisy places with many people.”, Kim Ngan explains. “My teachers and friends considered me the quietest in the class and my decision to study Economic Law at DTU surprised them all. I thought it was time to change, to lose my timidity, confidently engage in social activities and discover how to show my strengths, because all this is necessary later to succeed.”

Choosing to study far away encouraged Kim Ngan to tear down the barriers of her anxiety and boosted her self-confidence and she is always attempting to study more actively and passionately.

Dynamic classmates allow her to break out of her shell

One year and the many moments of confusion and worry because of the completely new study environment have passed. It was also a year marked with changes in Kim Ngan’s thinking and behavior. Moving out of her comfort zone was not easy, but she made gradual and significant steps.

“In the beginning, I was swept off my feet by my classmates’ dynamism and intelligence in class and in debates.”, she explains. “Although I had the highest graduation grades, many in my Economic Law class are much cleverer than I. They research information, work in groups and eagerly express their opinions on every issue. I rarely speak in class, it can be tiring at times, and the fact that I am not yet acclimatized to my new environment means that I must still try harder.”

Being catapulted into a completely new, dynamic study environment at the Faculty of Law  at DTU,  requires much self-study and Kim Ngan must progress rapidly to adapt and not get lost amongst her classmates. She also works after school to cover living expenses, engages in outside activities and converses freely with others.

Wishing to become a dedicated lawyer

Kim Ngan had good academic results in 2017-2018 due to her sustained efforts. “Since I was little I have dreamt of becoming a lawyer, speaking up in the name of justice,” she says, as she enthusiastically explains her career goals. “Now, with all I have learnt, I realize I will have to learn much more to view matters in a truly fair and objective way that respects the law and become stronger personally at the same time. And once I am a lawyer, I will give honest and candid advice and do the best I can to defend my clients’ rights.”

Kim Ngan demonstrates in an earnest and passionate way how she has become more confident and mature. Her new study environment has broadened her life experience and her love for the legal profession encourages her to resolve to learn and to develop herself even further, day after day.
