From the 21st to the 22nd of September 2010, DTU in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University in the USA held a seminar on “Systems Integration and Network Security” for students studying in the international program. Attending the conference were Dr. John Kang, Director of the Asia Cooperation of CMU, Prof. Shawn Butler, the main speaker and representatives from local companies DTU lecturers and students.
Dr. John Kang awards scholarships to excellent students
On the first day, the topic was Systems Integration which is considered to be one of the most complex fields in IT. It requires IT engineers with a good knowledge of computer engineering, business processes and programming. Prof. Butler emphasized: “The role of systems integration engineers is really important to the world today. It is more important for them to have a wide range of knowledge than specialized knowledge”.
Prof Shawn Butler gives a presentation about network security
The seminar on second day focused on “Network Security”. This topic is popular in discussions about the development of the Internet today. It is said that computers have greatly people’s lives. Thus, information security is an imperative requirement. Prof. Butler explained: “Network security is an essential component in systems configuration as well as network management”. The success of this seminar was enhanced by the many questions put by lecturers or students. According to experts, network security engineers can find a job when they graduate at university. However, for system integration engineers, it may take them 4-5 working year to be successful in their future career.
Professor Butler is CMU senior lecturer 20 years of experience in programming and software development. She is also an expert in system integration and network security, working on projects of the U.S. Defense Department.
Also at the seminar, the Boeing Aircraft Corporation awarded 5 scholarships worth 1, 000 USD each to top CMU students. These awards are a commitment in a long-lasting educational partnership between Boeing Aircraft and CMU. At DTU, 15 students have been awared this scholarship sofar.
