Training Physicians and Dentists at DTU Using AI and Simulation
Strong innovations in training methods with artificial intelligence (AI), physical and virtual simulations, and thorough investment in other facilities have delivered outstanding results in training for the health sciences at DTU.
Recognized with high rankings in international subject rankings, DTU’s medical programs have a large proportion of students who receive strong evaluations during their internships and when engaging in clinical practice at hospitals, clinics, and medical centers. This further affirms the quality of training at DTU in:
- General Practitioner and
- Odonto-Stomatology.
Confidence in these programs continues to grow, reflected in the steadily and rapidly increasing number of applicants in recent years.
AI and modern equipment in medical training
For more than five years, DTU has placed special emphasis on investing in its Medical Simulation Center (MedSIM) to integrate a wide range of models - from basic simulations to complex patient and pediatric-patient robots - into teaching at the College of Medicine & Pharmacy (CMP). These include models such as Laerdal SimMan 3G, SimMan Essential, and SimBaby, the Harvey cardiopulmonary examination database, and dental practice models for oral examination and treatment procedures, among more than 300 anatomical models and simulations for medical training and examination at DTU. This training approach aims to give medical students proficiency in common medical procedures and techniques typically assessed in the globally standardized OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) station-based exam. Many OSCE practice scenarios are scripted by an AI agent developed by DTU with multiple outcome pathways and intelligent and flexible student evaluation.
DTU’s simulation system for OSCE practice and examination is located in a dedicated area in building F at its 120 Hoang Minh Thao campus, Danang. It counts 19 scenario practice rooms, 7 control rooms, and 2 debriefing rooms, with a total investment value of over 2 million USD. For Odonto-Stomatology students, the training area is additionally fully equipped with imported dental chairs with integrated electrical, water, and air systems, dental handpieces, X-ray labs, mold and wax modeling labs, and 40 dental simulation practice units.
Numerous medical simulations and training products developed by DTU
Besides importing modern equipment, robots, and simulation software from developed countries, DTU lecturers and students — with support from the Centers for Visualization & Simulation (CVS), for Electrical Engineering (CEE), and for Mechanical Engineering (CME) - have successfully developed numerous medical devices and training products:
- 3D Human Anatomy Application for Medicine: first prize at the 2017 Vietnam Talent awards, a Sao Khue award in 2018, and second place at the 2018 ASEAN ICT awards. It reduces the need for extended practice on human cadavers and enables healthcare students to study and conduct research on their own.
- DTU SimSkin suture model: developed by students at DTU’s Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology. It features realistic anatomical form and structure, good elasticity, high tensile strength, and durability. It won second prize at the Smile CoDe research contest.

Many products supporting medical training were developed at DTU
- eCPR: device for training cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). It received a Sao Khue award in 2020, was granted a patent, and has been commercialized by the company WellBeing.
- dtu-VENT ventilator: meets all the requirements for use in emergencies and the treatment of Covid-19 patients or with other respiratory illnesses. It was rapidly developed during the early stage of the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2020.
- AED-302 trainer: to train users in defibrillation and CPR skills. It has entered commercialization in partnership with WellBeing.
- Flexi Legs active prosthesis: 2nd runner-up at the 2023 Accessibility Design Competition (ADC) and First Prize at the ASEAN Green Entrepreneurship Hackathon in 2024. It has been registered for a private patent.
- Online Medical Ecosystem: first prize at 2021 Youth Drivers for Change awards, first prize and “most influential” award at Sao Kim 2021, first prize at the Vietnam Social Innovation Challenge (VSIC) 2021, a certificate of merit from the Central Committee of the Vietnam Youth Federation, and an Engaged-Scholar award in 2021 from the Vietnamese Network of Engaged Scholars (VNES).
Comprehensive medical programs to train skilled physicians
DTU currently offers the following programs in medicine:
- Medicine, minor in General Practitioner,
- Odonto-Stomatology, minor in Odonto-Stomatology.
Beyond having a complete and modern infrastructure with an ecosystem of medical support devices and advanced learning approaches, the content and methods in DTU’s curricula for medicine are fundamentally built upon long-term collaborations with several renowned medical schools in the US:
- University of Pittsburgh (UPitt): 7th largest medical research budget in the US (according to the National Institutes of Health),
- University of Illinois Chicago (UIC): largest-scale training in medicine & pharmacy in the US (in terms of number of both students and majors),
- Duke–NUS Medical School (Singapore),
- Ben-Gurion University (Israel),
- Burapha University, Khon Kaen University, and Mahidol University (Thailand),
- Chungbuk National University, Dong-A University, and Yeungnam University (South Korea).

Modern facilities ensure medical teaching and learning quality at DTU
For clinical practice, DTU students are personally guided and evaluated by physicians and specialists at major hospitals and medical centers in Vietnam through a hands-on mentoring approach. This takes place at:
- Hue Central Hospital,
- Danang Hospital,
- C Hospital,
- Hospital 199 of the Ministry of Public Security,
- Danang Hospital for Women & Children,
- Military Hospital 17,
- Danang Oncology Hospital,

Scientists from world-leading institutions frequently support development of medicine at DTU
In July 2025, three scientists from Harvard University, Cornell University, and the University of Connecticut visited DTU to give presentations on “Innovative Technology Applications in Healthcare”. They shared their research findings, discussed current trends, and encouraged research collaboration with Vietnam to better serve the public:
- Prof. Dr Samir Mitragotri (Harvard University): co-founder of Cage Bio, i2o Therapeutics, and Fount Bio, Inc. - companies specialized in developing drug delivery technologies,
- Prof. Dr Yadong Wang (Cornell University): co-founder of Global Biomedical Technology, a company specialized in biomedical technology,
- Assoc. Prof. Dr Nguyen Duc Thanh, currently conducting research and lecturing on medical materials at the University of Connecticut.
This is just one example among many international research groups that visit Danang annually to share expertise, provide development consultation, train specialists, and collaborate with DTU in medicine, biotechnology, and biomedical engineering.

Scientists from world-leading universities regularly participate in activities at DTU
