ITCMU Capstone 2026: When AI Provides Foundation for Solutions with Practical Value

From May 17 to 23, 2026, the Duy Tan University International School (VN-US) successfully held the 2026 capstone project defense for the students in its international IT programs (ITCMU).

More than a final-course requirement, the capstone project has long been the main academic milestone for ITCMU students - a culmination of their knowledge, skills, internship experience, and problem-solving abilities in highly practical projects.

What made the capstone projects of 2026 stand out was one noteworthy statistic: 100% of the projects applied AI, machine learning, or generative AI as a core component of their solutions. This reflects a clear shift in the orientation of the ITCMU curriculum: from traditional software engineers towards professionals capable of leveraging and building intelligent systems in the AI era.

AI is no longer a trend; it is now a core competency

While capstone projects in previous years primarily focused on developing management systems, e-commerce platforms, and web or mobile applications, those in 2026 showed a significant evolution in technological thinking.

The student teams boldly applied AI across a wide range of domains:

•    diagnostics and healthcare support;
•    smart education and learning;
•    business data analytics;
•    natural-language processing;
•    decision-support systems;
•    e-commerce and customer service;
•    cybersecurity and anomaly detection;
•    business process automation.

Notably, many projects went beyond simply integrating existing AI models. They actively researched, trained, and fine-tuned models, or developed architectures that combine AI with modern software platforms.

This reflects how today’s ITCMU students not only learn how to use technology but are also equipped with the ability to understand, evaluate, and develop AI-driven solutions that address real societal needs.

From real-world problems to deployable solutions

One of the most important requirements of the ITCMU capstone projects is that they must all start from a real-world need.

This year’s projects were developed from specific issues faced by businesses, organizations, and communities. As a result, the jury judged that many of the products have potential to grow into solutions for real-world deployment after further refinement concerning scale and features.

Rather than focusing solely on technical matters, the students were required to approach their projects with a product mindset: identifying target users, analyzing the issue, designing solutions, user testing, and evaluating operational feasibility in real-world environments.

This is the difference that makes the capstone project a bridge between academic learning and professional practice.

Industry participation from mentorship to jury

Another highlight of capstone 2026 was the extensive involvement of businesses throughout the implementation of the projects.

Technology professionals from both domestic and international technology companies participated not only as guests or final evaluators but also as mentors who gave the students guidance throughout months of product development.

From helping shape project ideas, giving their opinions on system architectures, and evaluating technology to pre-defense feedback, the industry experts provided the students with real-world perspectives of current labor market requirements.

As a result, the projects were assessed not only from an academic perspective but also against the standards of a professional working environment.

This is the training model that ITCMU has been working on for many years: bringing businesses deep into the learning process to narrow the gap between academia and practice.

International integration on display

In addition to specialized expertise, this year’s defense sessions showcased the ITCMU students’ ability to work in international environments.

Many of the teams conducted their reports, presentations, and discussions entirely in English. Several students of the Japanese Bridge Software Engineer (BrSE) program also used Japanese for technical discussions and product presentations.

The ability to access international resources, work with novel technologies, and present solutions in foreign languages has become a significant competitive advantage for ITCMU students in an increasingly competitive global job market.

From capstone to career opportunity

For many years, the capstone project has served not only as a final academic assessment but also as a chance for companies to identify and recruit promising talent.

Through the defense sessions, many students attracted the interest from partner companies, particularly in AI engineering, data analytics, software engineering, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

This reflects the effectiveness of ITCMU’s educational philosophy: training students not merely to graduate, but to work, create value, and adapt quickly to a professional environment from their very first day.

Training to create value

Capstone 2026 concluded with dozens of projects receiving high praise for their creativity, practical applicability, and level of completion.

More importantly, this year’s defense week highlighted a new generation of technology students- more confident, more proactive, and ready to face the challenges of the AI era.

As artificial intelligence continues to transform the way people learn, work, and create, the objective of technology education is no longer to simply train technology users. Instead, it is to train people capable of creating value through technology.

And that is precisely the goal of the ITCMU program.
