DTU Journal in Scopus Index Thanks to International Collaboration

The Scopus Content Selection & Advisory Board (CSAB) approved DTU’s international journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems for inclusion in the Scopus database.

It took DTU three years since the official launch of the journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems, seven years since the inception of the idea and the start of its implementation, to get this far.

At the announcement ceremony in the afternoon of February 16th, many researchers at the university in Vietnam and abroad met to give their evaluations, share information, and suggest specific orientations with the wish the journal would continue publishing many valuable science articles and DTU would found more valuable science journals in new fields.

Inclusion in Scopus database

Scopus was created in November 2004 and is owned by Elsevier publishers (Netherlands). The bibliographic database contains 57 million abstracts in about 22,000 categories from over 5,000 publishers, including 30,000 specialized peer-reviewed journals in science, technology, medicine, social sciences, arts, and humanities.

DTU’s international journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems

The journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems was jointly founded by DTU and the European Alliance for Innovation (EAI) in Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems in 2018 and has ISSN 2410-0218.
To be included in the Scopus index, journals undergo a very strict assessment of their quality, impact, publisher reputation, prestige, and author and editor diversity.

In particular, journals must regularly publish four volumes per year for at least three years with international papers of quality. The editorial board consists of Prof. Dr Duong Quang Trung (Queen’s University Belfast, UK), Dr Le Nguyen Bao, and Dr Vo Nguyen Son (DTU, Vietnam), who worked together very well the past years, in addition to colleagues in Vietnam and abroad. They ensure the continuity of volumes and quality, which allowed it to pass the stringent and serious assessment by the CSAB and be included in the Scopus index.

The journal is focused on a variety of subjects:

? applications of wireless sensor network,
? Big Data,
? industrial communication and control networks,
? Artificial Intelligence (AI),
? Machine learning.

High appreciation from many scientists

DTU researchers in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang shared research orientations at the announcement ceremony

“About six or seven years ago, Dr Le Nguyen Bao, co-editor-in-chief, told me about his idea to found a journal with initial objective inclusion in Scopus or Thomson ISI,” Prof. Dr Duong Quang Trung, editor-in-chief of the journal, said from the UK. “This is a long journey, requiring five, ten, or twenty years, as it depends on research orientations and many related factors. While working on a research project in 2018, we recognized an opportunity to found the journal. Dr Bao and I are editors-in-chief; I take care of the specialized side, Dr Bao takes care of organization, management, and personnel.”

Publishing a journal is very difficult. To make the journal well-known with many readers ever more so, as there are millions of similar journals. How do you attract readers, interest, and quality submissions from scientists? And we chose for our journal to be Open Access.

You need to meet many criteria concerning number of citations, editorial board from over 40 different countries, and number of quality papers, all the while ensuring to publish four volumes per year with at least five papers per volume (for a total of over twenty accepted papers out of the hundreds of submissions) for three years straight, before you can be accepted in the Scopus index.

According to the data from the last three months, over a hundred papers were received, about 83 were rejected, 13 were accepted, and about 4 are under review. Luckily, the journal received a huge lot of support from DTU and the cooperation from scientists around the world - all out of a passion for science and for creating new knowledge for society. I hope the journal will soon be included into the ISI index with many more quality publications.”

Prof. Dr Duong Quang Trung’s notable achievements and prizes

Prestigious Research Fellowship (2015-2020) for young researchers from the Royal Academy of Engineering. (That year, only 8 people in the entirety of the UK received the award in all science & technology fields.)
Named full professor by the Queen’s University Belfast - one of the leading universities in the UK - after having worked there for just over 6 years (in 2018). This is one of the fastest promotions in the university’s 200-year history.
Awards for the best scientific research at IEEE Globecom - the world’s largest telecommunications conference - in 2016 and 2019.
The prestigious Newton Prize in 2017, awarded by the Newton Prize Committee (Newton Foundation, UK) in collaboration with UNESCO.
Included in the list of the world’s hundred thousand most influential scientists by lifetime achievement (published by the American journal PLOS Biology).

Dr Le Nguyen Bao speaking on the future development of the journal

Scientific research is a core element in the development of a university. Besides its quality papers in the world’s prestigious journals, having one of its journals included in the Scopus index to build its own internal strength is very important. Such internal strength must initially come from international collaboration - collaboration with prestigious researchers, universities, and organizations around the world for joint development - as the initial experience of a university is scarce or nearly non-existent. This once more affirms the correctness of government and Ministry of Education & Training policies (decrees 87/2014/ND-CP, 99/2014/ND-CP, and 27/2020/ND-CP) as well as of following the general trend of the world in continuously developing and expanding an international scientific network to develop domestic scientific research.

“Today’s achievement is the result of the efforts of the scientists at DTU and their colleagues around the world, and the devotion of Prof. Dr Trung - who, in spite of working abroad, is still concerned with supporting the development of science in Vietnam - deserves special mention,” Dr Le Nguyen Bao, joint editor-in-chief of the journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems, explained. “I hope that the journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems will provide us with a mold and experience to create even more quality journals in different fields, which would be accepted for inclusion in the world’s prestigious indices. Several fields are currently strongly developing at our university, such as physics and computer engineering. We are thinking of founding one or two more international journals with the aspiration of inclusion in Scopus or ISI. We call for collaboration with prestigious scientists and other universities, and especially in Vietnam, to found alliances for journals of worldwide prestige.”

Officially founded in 2018, DTU’s journal Industrial Networks and Intelligent Systems has become one of the nine journals in all of Vietnam to be included in the Scopus index, and it is furthermore the first from Central Vietnam to do so.
