Researchers from DTU School of Technology Center for Visualization & Simulation (CVS) have recently announced the AED-302 trainer, which enables users to develop their basic cardiogenic shock (CS) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills.

Studies have shown that patients who suddenly go into cardiac arrest because of a stroke, electric shock or drowning, can be revived with a 50-75% success rate, if both CPR and AED first aid are implemented together within the first 5 minutes. In Vietnam, it normally takes from 25 to 35 minutes for an ambulance to reach a patient, which greatly endangers their lives if first aid is not administered within the first few minutes.
CVS Director, MSc. Le Van Chung said: "An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation (VF) and pulseless ventricular tachycardia and is able to treat patients by defibrillation, where electricity arrests the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish a steady rhythm.
However, users need to have basic knowledge of cardiopulmonary shock and basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation to use Automated External Defibrillators. The AED-302 Trainer is a copy of one and teaches users first aid procedures, although the device does not have the built-in electric shock features.”
The objective of the trainer team is to conserve community health with the motto "Every citizen should know certain ways of preventing themselves and their relatives from disease,” and they are now working to perfect the AED-302 with a fuller range of features, including electric shocks.

“The AED-302 is made of plastic, which can withstand impact and dirt. It is convenient and compact, smaller than the size of a sheet of A4 paper, strapped on the back with the electrode plate concealed in a small pocket. Its lithium battery lasts for up to 4 hours and takes 90 minutes to recharge, so it can be used in the classroom without interruption.” said MSc. Le Van Chung.
Before developing the product, the team reviewed the guidelines of the WHO and the American Heart Association, (AHA). They then came up with 8 real-world scenarios closely following the AHA procedures. These are then displayed on a screen, with step-by-step, recorded instructions in both Vietnamese and English. In addition, users can devise various first aid training exercises by remote control. Because of its simplicity, compact design and superior features, the AED-302 Trainer is expected to become an important device for easy use at commercial centers, airports, train stations, offices, beaches, swimming pools and educational institutions
The product has received much constructive feedback from Health Sciences lecturers, hospitals and emergency centers and DTU plans to continue to develop the AED-302 trainer with even more functionality.
In 2017, MSc Chung and his research team also successfully developed an application entitled “Using 3D Virtual Reality Technology to Simulate the Human body for Health science Education and Research”, which won first prize at the Viet Nam Talent Awards 2017.
