The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) is still the national leader by number of international publications in the period from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020.
The Current Index, a ranking subsidiary to the Nature Index, just announced its top ten of Vietnamese research institutions in the period from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 in four subjects: Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Life Sciences.
According to the Nature Index ranking, the top ten of leading Vietnamese research institutions is as follows:
The assessment methodology of the Nature Index is based on two indices: the Article Count (AC), the number of scientific papers per institution or country in the timeframe under consideration in high-impact journals, and the Fractional Count (FC), the fractional contribution of the authors from that institution or country. If a paper has ten authors, each author is awarded 1/10 point.
Based on the period from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, Vietnam’s AC is 74 and its FC is 15.27. The major contribution to the FC comes from the Physical Sciences with 9.77 points. Next comes Chemistry with 2.46 points. The Life Sciences contribute 1.7 points. Finally, the Earth & Environmental Sciences earn 1.8 points.
The VAST is still the leader in research in the list of domestic universities and research institutes with an AC of 33 points and an FC of 3.52 points.
Second and third are Duy Tan University and the Hanoi University of Science & Technology (HUST). Phenikaa University, a still young private university, is also present in the ranking at fourth position.
The remaining positions are in order: the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE) in Quy Nhon, the National University Ho Chi Minh City, the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) Vietnam, the National University Hanoi, the Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Tropical Diseases, and Le Quy Don Technical University.
Looking at the ranking per country and territory, based on the period from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020, Vietnam is 53rd of the world by number of quality international publications.
Based on the same period, the US still lead with an FC of 20,081.59 - 1.5 and 4.46 times that of the countries ranked second and third, China and Germany.
In Southeast Asia, Singapore comes 17th with an FC of 602.5, and Thailand ranks 41st with an FC of 47.4.
The Nature Index selects 82 globally leading journals out of thousands of prestigious international journals to base the ranking on, divided into four subjects: Physical Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Life Sciences.
According to Nature Research, the Current Index is a ranking announced every month based on data from articles published in the year previous to that month. This is why this ranking allows an assessment of international publication activity throughout the previous year at a research institution or in a country.
