DTU has endeavored to link education and research in its mission to become a large, modern and reputable university. With noteworthy achievements in every field, DTU’s reputation for research has soared due to its many well-cited papers published in prestigious international journals.

Attracting and retaining the right talent
According to Dr. Le Nguyen Bao, DTU Provost, by introducing favorable policies to attract more high-caliber talents, DTU has brought together a team of PhD and Master’s graduates from well-known universities worldwide, from countries such as the USA, Russia, France, Germany, Canada, South Korea, Belgium and Japan.

DTU currently has one thousand one hundred and eighty full-time staff members and lecturers, of whom 16.5% hold PhDs or other professorial titles and 75% with Master’s degrees, who all teach and conduct research. Through their high-level contacts, they have created a network of leading scientists from all over the world, who all contribute to the quality of research at DTU.
DTU scientists work on projects in Electricity and Electronics, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Physics, Optics and Mathematics, Biotechnology and others. This new research environment has allowed DTU to organize both national and international conferences in Information Technology, in 2013, Electronics and Telecommunications, at Commantel in 2013 and 2014, and SigTelCom in 2017, in Spectroscopy and Optics.
At the Viet Nam Talent Awards 2017 held at Hanoi's Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Labour Cultural Palace on November 16th, DTU researchers were awarded the first prize in IT category for the application entitled “Using 3D Virtual Reality Technology to Simulate the Human body for Health science Education and Research”. With the project entitled: “Building a Foundation for Sustainable Development: ''Networked Societies” for the Cities of Tomorrow”, Dr. Duong Quang Trung from Queen’s University Belfast in the UK and Dr. Vo Nguyen Son from Duy Tan University were awarded the 2017 Newton Prize Vietnam.
Creating an academic environment
DTU research is diverse, from fundamental to applied, and research institutes & centers have been created with training and experimental labs with modern equipment for high-tech applied research: the Institute for Basic and Applied Research in HCM City; the Institute for Basic and Applied Research in Hanoi; Institute for Global Health Innovations; Institute for Research and Training in Medicine, Biology and Pharmacy; Center for Software Engineering (CSE) Center for Information Technology and Communications (CIT); Center for Electrical Engineering (CEE); Silver Swallows Studio; Microsoft Innovation Center (MIC), and others.
DTU also focuses on the quality of research as well as the quantity. Quality is usually measured by an Impact Factor (IF) and a journal ranking (from Q1 to Q4) in the corresponding fields. In the 2018 academic year, DTU had 11 publications in journals with an IF over 50, 22 publications from 10 to 50, and 210 from 3 to 10.Impact factors for some of the most famous leading journals are: The New England Journal of Medicine (IF 79.3), Lancet (IF 53.3), JAMA (IF 47.7), Advanced Energy Materials (IF 21.9), Reports on Progress in Physics (IF 14.3), Nature Communications (IF 12.4), PNAS (IF 9.5), Carbon (IF 7.1), Cancer Research (IF 9.1), the Journal of Materials Chemistry A (IF 9.9), Annals of Tourism Research (IF 5.1), and the Journal of Sustainable Tourism (IF 3.3). 52.7% of the DTU papers were published in Q1 and 35.5% in Q2 journals.
With significant achievements in education and research, on February 20th, DTU officially became the first private university in Vietnam to receive a Certificate of National Education Quality from the Center for Education Accreditation of the Association of Vietnamese Universities and Colleges.
In June 2017 DTU partnered with Keuka College in the USA to offer students the On-Site Study-Abroad programs in Business Administration. DTU will now continue to seek national and international accreditation from other organizations. The University has set a goal to become one of the top 300 Asian universities, (by Times Higher Education –THE- ranking system)
Achieving a record
In the 2018 academic year, DTU gained an impressive achievement, with lecturers and researchers publishing 840 international papers out of a total of 1,240 submissions.
Of 840 international papers, 90% were published in prestigious journals and selected by the American Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and the Dutch scientific catalog system Scopus. Significantly, 60% of these have a DTU lecturer or researcher as the main or corresponding author.
DTU researchers are active in all fields: Natural sciences with 315 papers accounting for 37.5%; Medicine, Pharmacy & Nursing with 141 papers accounting for 16.8%; Computer science, Electrical engineering: 16.8%; Civil engineering: 12.5%; Environmental and food sciences: 6%; Economics, Management, Hospitality, Social sciences: 6%; Biotechnology: 3% and Agriculture with 13 papers accounting for 1.5%.
Significantly, in the 2018 academic year patent number RU2661210C1 was issued after one year with the title “A method for obtaining the composite sorbent with magnetic properties”, granted by the Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property, RUPTO, to Dr. Le Van Thuan of the DTU Center for Advanced Chemistry and his team.
The patent describes a way of producing sorbents with high performance magnetic properties for use in wastewater treatment, from powdered coffee grounds. The team claims that, after commercialization, the invention will be highly important in environmental protection. Applying the patent brings two advantages: processing coffee grounds, a waste product from the food and beverage industry which is otherwise discarded, and providing a sorbent for low-cost industrial wastewater treatment.
