These are two simple things that need to be understood before making a decision to study law. A law career is becoming a more and more popular choice, and the demand for graduates is sharply increasing.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuan speaks at the Founding Ceremony of the Faculty of Law
DTU lecturers and students provide potential law students with their own testimonies, with advice for students wondering whether or not to choose this major.
“Bachelors of Law can secure excellent jobs”
This is the first reason, says Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuan, Dean of the DTU Faculty of Law, who has been educating her students with this objective since the faculty was first established.
“According to data from the Ministry of Law, Vietnam will need about thirteen thousand legal professionals, two thousand notaries and three thousand clerks by 2020,” Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuan explains. “These numbers will continue growing in the near future, in order to litigate business and communal disputes of varying levels of complexity. Meanwhile, despite this demand, we must not relax educational standards. This is why our Law lecturers must ensure that their graduates are fully-qualified to meet the ever-increasing requirements and secure excellent careers.”
Universities must therefore be proactive when forming teams of skilled Law lecturers and implementing curricula and teaching methods which provide the ideal study and research environment. The DTU team guarantees this, with two Associate Professors, two PhDs and five Masters from Vietnamese and foreign universities. In addition, the faculty collaborates with leading Vietnamese law institutes, such as the Hanoi University of Law, the Ho Chi Minh city University of Law and the University of Economics and Law in Ho Chi Minh city, who are invited to teach at DTU as required.
PBL is a highly-advanced teaching method used in leading universities worldwide to study Law, Economic Law and Social Science. DTU also organizes workshops and exchange meetings with law firms, where students can familiarize themselves while still at school with the daily work of a lawyer and gain practical experience through regular mock trial events.
“Experience: the most brutal of all teachers”
“If you bury yourself under a heap of legal documents and heavy textbooks filled with academic theory, studying law will become an unending bore,” explains LLM Nguyen Van Phung, a registered lawyer and DTU lecturer. “An outstanding law student absorbs knowledge rapidly and knows how to apply it to real-life situations.”

Do not teach “empty-handed” has become a motto throughout DTU and law students have come to benefit greatly from long-standing partnerships with local companies. Lecturers have strong connections with the local legal profession at various levels, in government, with notaries and consultants, where students can intern in their second or third years and are able to observe practical real-time situations and work with legal dossiers.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuan also announced that the DTU Faculty of Law will establish the Legal Consulting Center in 2019 to advise individuals and organizations and, at the same time, broaden the practical knowledge of students even further. The Danang People’s Court is actually proposing that DTU should be allowed to conduct real court cases onsite as early as possible, which will again provide an excellent practical orientation for the students.
“Studying law out of passion”
An outstanding student, Huynh Ba Tan from K21, explains that he chose to study law because he loved it ever since he was a child.
Huynh Ba Tan explained “When I watched court scenes in movies, with lawyers clearly explaining legal clauses, I thought that studying law meant I had to be a book-worm and super brainy to learn everything. “But when I started at DTU, I found out that learning legal information by heart does not necessarily mean you can apply it and work with it. To study law requires reasoning and an analytic understanding of special issues, and only then can law be practiced effectively.”

Huynh Ba Tan is currently a leader in the Young Lawyers Club and, thanks to his DTU education, has already found a job with a local notary while still only in his second year.
“The Young Lawyers Club is a vital extracurricular activity for law students like myself,” Huynh Ba Tan explains. “We can share information and hold ‘mock trials’ to observe how the law is practiced in real-time situations. The university and faculty also organize workshops and seminars where can meet legal experts and learn all about the profession and requirements.”
In 2019, DTU continues awarding a several preferential scholarships to law students:
