The CDIO Council elected Dr. Tran Nhat Tan, Director of the DTU Learning and Testing Center, as a new Member-At-Large on the International CDIO Council at the 14th International CDIO Conference, which was held at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) in Japan, from June 28 to July 2.

The CDIO Initiative,(Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate), is the most advanced educational system used in Engineering and Technology education. It was first introduced in 2000 by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Chalmers University of Technology, Linkoping University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Currently, CDIO has been implemented by 120 universities and colleges worldwide and has become the universal standard. In Vietnam, the National University in HCMC first joined CDIO in 2010 and DTU was the second in 2012, together with a few other schools since then.
The application of CDIO has allowed DTU to make great advances in educational orientation and quality in:

• Mechatronics
• Construction
• Environmental Technology
• Food Technology
• Architecture
• Information Systems

A powerful example of the effectiveness of CDIO at DTU is that Engineering and Technology students have won big prizes in international competitions:
- Champions of the 2013 CDIO Cup at Harvard University and MIT
- Members of the winning CDIO teams in 2016, 2017 and 2018
- Champions of the 2014 Asia-Pacific IDEERS competition
- Winners of the Go Green in the City Vietnam competitions in 2016 and 2017
- Winners of the Vietnam Microsoft Imagine Cup in 2016 and 2017
Dr. Tran Nhat Tan, Director of the DTU Learning and Testing Center, was nominated as Member At-Large on the 2018-2021 International CDIO Council, based on these achievements and on DTU’s regular contributions to the association. He was voted second, close to the winner, to become one of the three CDIO Council Members-At-Large elected this year, who were:
- Dr. Juha Kontio, Dean of Engineering and Business, Turku University of Applied Sciences, Finland.
- Dr. Tran Nhat Tan, DTU, Vietnam.
- Dr. Sarah Junaid, Head of Quality Assurance at the Mechanical Engineering and Design group, Aston University, UK.
Dr. Tan is the second Asian Member-At-Large on the CDIO Council, in addition to Dr. Natha Kuptasthien from Chulalongkorn University and Rajamangala University in Thailand. It is a great honor for a member of a Vietnamese university to hold a council member position in a prestigious and global association such as CDIO
