The handheld parking-ticket dispenser using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology was created by MS. Tran Le Thang Dong (project leader), Mr. Nguyen Duy Hoa, Mr. Nguyen Huu Chien and the DTU Center of Electronic Engineering (CEE). Thanks to its great convenience, the device allows check-ins and check-outs to be handled in a faster and more secure manner and it received consolation prize at the 13th National Technical Innovation Contest.
Mr. Tran Le Thang Dong introduces his handheld parking-ticket dispensor using RFID technology
Presently, the supervision of motorbikes at companies, factories, hospitals, markets and schools is almost always done manually, such as by chalking on the saddle and handing out disposable printed tickets. A number of big supermarkets and enterprises have built parking supervision systems equipped with dispensing and receiving stations using computers, cameras and magnetic card scanners; however, the cost of installation, warranty and maintenance is high, and such systems are only suitable for certain places. Therefore, with the financial support from DTU, after 7 months formulating ideas and researching, Mr. Tran Le Thang Dong and his team have manufactured a handheld parking-ticket dispensor using RFID technology to minimize the above drawbacks.
Mr. Dong said their goals were not only to make parking supervision more convenient, but also to save transit time, to save the cost of management and installation, to enhance the parking management process at agencies and to create a civilized environment in the parking lot. This device can be applied at public parking lots, markets, schools, hospitals and industrial zones with high flow of people.
According to Mr. Dong, the handheld dispensor allows parking overseers to arrange vehicles and dispense tickets simultaneously. A parking lot can use 1 or 2 devices, depending on the number of vehicles, and all the data about them will be stored in a card (given to guests). According to Mr. Dong’s analysis, the operation principle of the device is that, when a motorbike enters, the overseer will input the license plate into the device and lightly tap the device with the card in order to store the data into it, and give the card to the guest. When the guest exits, the keeper will tap the card to the device for number identification. In some industrial zones, workers can keep their parking cards. If a worker owns more than one motorbike, the parking card also allows saving many license plates. Using the RFID card, many parking lots can minimize the trash resulting from parking tickets and the guests will not be bothered by their vehicles written full of numbers.
Each parking ticket dispenser costs only between 15 and 20 million VND, and it can be used by an attendant in a parking area which accommodates between 500 and 1,000 vehicles. The research team members have registered intellectual property rights for their product, and they are waiting for a patent.
In the near future, with the permission of DTU, Mr. Dong and his team will promote cooperation with specialized companies to sell the product.
