The Fifth Season of Learning Express Launched at DTU

After four previous successful sessions, DTU organized the fifth Learning Express event from March 28th to April 8th. Twenty-six students and three lecturers from Singapore Polytechnic visited villages in Quang Nam, together with DTU lecturers and students, to learn about traditional craft-making.

Mr. Victor Choo, a lecturer in the School of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Singapore Polytechnic, said: "Begun in 2011, Learning Express is an exchange program for students on their road to exploring the world. Besides providing students with a great opportunity to experience the cultures of all the countries in the ASEAN community, Learning Express also helps local students to improve their practical knowledge, social skills and relationships. The recent visit by Singapore’s Prime Minister Ly Hien Long to Vietnam from March 21st to 24th proved that Singapore always pays special attention to its relationship with Vietnam. I hope that the Learning Express program can contribute to enhancing a long-lasting friendship between Vietnam and Singapore in general, particularly between our universities.”

From March 30th to April 2nd, SP and DTU students went to the Dien Ban district in Quang Nam province to learn about weaving sleeping-mats (in Dong Binh), rice paper-making (in Dien Phuong) and casting bronze (in Phuoc Kieu village). By applying their creative skills, students recommended potential new products and suggested ways of improving current production. During the trip, they learned about craft-making and familiarized themselves with village life. By applying what they have learned in their Design Thinking course about the improvement of craft production, they will try to suggest ways of making the villagers’ lives more productive. Students also toured Danang and Ho An.

Geralyn Knek, a first year student of Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Chemical & Life Sciences, said: "This is the first time I have visited Danang, a beautiful coastal city that I first noticed on tourism websites. Meeting the friendly and helpful DTU students fired our enthusiasm. Participating now in the fifth season of Learning Express, I have learned more about Vietnamese culture, had some interesting experiences, enjoyed local specialties and made new friends.”
