The CDIO Annual International Conference, organized by the Turku University of Applied Sciences took place from the 12th to 16th of June at the University of Turku in Finland with 283 delegates from 31 countries attending.
“Enhancing innovation through technical education advances”
The annual International CDIO Conference is a forum where educators from leading technical education institutions worldwide meet to exchange their latest ideas on how to adopt CDIO as the framework of their curricular planning and outcome-based assessment. So far, 125 universities have adopted CDIO in their training.
100 papers out of 239 submitted were presented this year. With 7 accepted papers, Vietnam was ranked in the top 5 countries with the most papers presented at the conference, behind Sweden with 38 papers, Finland with 23, Canada with 10 and China with 8. DTU contributed 4 papers and 1 work in progress.
Conference attendees included managers, professionals, representatives of technology companies, engineers, lecturers and students from 31 educational institutes worldwide, including Dr. Riitta Rissanen, Executive Director of the Rector’ Conference of Finish Universities of Applied Sciences; Benedict Cheong, CEO of the Temasek Fund in Singapore; Dr. Kawashima, Director of Institute of Research on Ageing and Cancer of Tohoku University in Japan; and Dr. Somerville, Special Adviser at Olin University in the US.
Researchers highlighted the role of developing simulation systems in university teaching, which DTU adopted several years ago by constructing virtual reality simulation labs to support the teaching of Strategic Management, Banking, Surgery and Nursing.
DTU is a Hallmark at the 12th CDIO Academy
DTU is recognized for its remarkable contributions to the CDIO community
Since becoming a member of CDIO Academy in 2012, DTU has applied CDIO to teaching Technology and Engineering and enhanced its relationships with partners at home and abroad. At the annual CDIO conferences, DTU has shared its experiences and helped other universities to effectively adopt the CDIO model. In 2013, with the project “A Low-cost Do-It-Yourself Water-Filtering System for Farmers”, DTU students won the 2013 CDIO Cup for Engineering projects, held at Harvard University and MIT.
The five topics submitted by DTU this year were: “Validity assessment of the P-B-P model across various engineering disciplines for better team learning results” (by Tran Le Thang Dong, Ha Dac Binh and Le Nguyen Bao); “Using Facebook as a supplementary communication channel for active learning” (by Truong Tien Vu, Le Nguyen Bao and Nguyen Tan Thuan); “Investigation of the geosocial obstacles in the curriculum development of Civil engineering programs in Vietnam (by Nguyen The Duong, Tran Van Duc, Duong Minh Chau, and Nguyen Chien Thang); “Capstone problem design for optimal learning curve in Architecture design” (by Luong Xuan Hieu and Le Nguyen Bao); and “Embeding Design- Build experiences into Environmental Engineering programs” (by Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong and Tran Nhat Tan).
The CDIO Student Academy was held at the same time as the conference. Ton That Binh was the leader of the team that won the 2016 CDIO Academy Cup. Acknowledging DTU’s contribution to the CDIO community, the CDIO Academy chose DTU to host their regional conference in 2018.
