On the occasion of the Traditional Day of Students and the Vietnam Student Association Central Committee, Pham Van, Vice-President of the DTU Student Association became one of 96 students honored nationwide with a January Star, for his excellent academic achievements, and continuous hard work for the union and association.
Other winners included:
- Two students who won Student of Five Merits titles at the national level, from a total of 196
- Three student Groups of Five Merits at national level, out of 29 groups
- Fifty-one Students of Five Merits at the city level and 165 Students of Five Merits at the university level.

Pham Van Mai, January Star, with the affectionate nickname ‘blue-shirt leader’
At the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, in the DTU School of Engineering & Technology (SET), Pham Van Mai goes by the nickname ‘the blue-shirt leader’ because of his enthusiasm and passion for all Youth Union activities. He grew up in a farming family, and tries to help out in the fields as well as studying.
“My parents are busy all year but have enabled all five children to go to school to and aim for the best possible careers in the future,” Mai explains. “We understand their hardship and always remember that we should study hard to bring them happiness. We have also learned from them about perseverance, patience, selflessness and friendliness, by observing the way they lead their lives in harmony with the local community and people around them.”
As soon as he arrived at DTU, Pham Van Mai chose to study hard and actively participate in the Union at the same time. He has held several positions simultaneously, such as: a member of the Vietnamese Student Association Executive Committee; member of the Danang Student Association Executive Committee; Vice-President of the DTU Student Association; member of the DTU Youth Union Executive Committee; and Vice-Secretary of the DTU School of Engineering & Technology Union.

His January Star, awarded by the Vietnam Student Association Central Committee, is the result of continuing hard work and community activities. Mai’s other notable achievements include:
- A Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements for the Student Association and Movement in the 2018-2023 term, at national and city levels
- A Certificate of Merit for outstanding work on the 2023 Green Summer volunteer campaign
- A 2023 Ccertified DTU Student Leader, by the DTU Student Association
Although he gives all he can for Union events, Mai focuses on strictly balancing his ongoing volunteer activities and his university studies and research. His average score in the 2022-2023 school year was good, with 3.31/4.00, and he is now a leading student in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in academic achievement and research, with:
- First and second prizes at the 2023 ‘Student research, digital transformation, startups, and innovation’ contest, organized by the Danang City Union
- First prize at the 2023 VietFuture Future Innovation Award, organized by VINASA
- A Certificate of Merit for the most-voted scientific poster, at the 2023 25th Eureka student research contest
Student of Five Merits Tran Ngoc Thanh Doan, a ‘little fire’ of energy
Tran Ngoc Thanh Doan is often compared to a ‘little fire’ of energy and enthusiasm in her Union activities at the Faculty of Medicine of the College of Medicine and Pharmacy (CMP), and at DTU in general.

“I’d been taking part in Union activities for a long time, but things were quite different when I arrived at DTU,” said the young woman from Khanh Hoa. “The friendly and energizing Union activities at DTU and the older students pleased me, and I was gradually lured into group activities. These events have helped me develop my vital soft skills and personal hidden qualities, and I’m progressing daily in the ways I communicate and innovate.”
Balancing her medical studies with Union activities is challenging. However, Thanh Doan’s time management skills have allowed her to overcome those difficulties and combine her excellent study achievements and accomplishments at group events.

- In 2021-2022 and 2022-2023, a Student of Five Merits of Danang title
- In 2023, the title of ‘Youthful Example of the Advancement of Uncle Ho’s Words of Danang’
- In 2023, Third prize in the ministry-level ‘Students and Scientific Research’ contest
- In 2023, First prize at the ‘ASEAN Online Medical Course of the Future’
- In 2023, Third prize in the Social Entrepreneurship Incubation Program, organized by the British Council
Student of Five Merits, Truong Hoang Ngoc Quy, determined to become an anesthesiologist
Relying on his family, Truong Hoang Ngoc Quy, from Hue, is confident and energetic in anything he undertakes. From studying to researching to Union activities, this General Practitioner student always impresses others with his youthful enthusiasm, and has received several awards:
- In 2023, a national-level Student of Five Merits title
- In 2021 and 2022, a city-level Student of Five Merits title
- In 2023, a Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements in the Green Summer campaign, awarded by the Danang Student Association

Ngoc Quy was awarded a Student of Five Merits title in 2023
“I was born and raised in the dreamlike city of Hue, but to study in Danang,” confides Ngoc Quy. “DTU was my top choice, supported by my family and relatives, with the ambition to become a doctor of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation. The facilities at DTU, and the companionship of my lecturers have allowed me to steadily move ahead academically, and motivated me to participate several Union events, where I have matured and gained much experience.”
