The 2012 International Coastal Clean-up Day

On the occasion of the 2012 International Coastal Clean-up Day, students of the DTU Department of Tourism and the Vocational College collaborated with members of Youth Union in the Dien Duong and Dien Ban Districts and at The Nam Hai Resort to clean up the beaches.

The International Coastal Clean-up Day (ICCD) is an annual voluntary activity held in the middle of September. In addition to cleaning beaches, the day is organized to improve community awareness about the coastal ecosystem, the preservation of underwater sites, coral and the removal of debris and rubbish.

The event was first held in 1985, by the Environmental Studies of Office of Toxic Substances, under the control of United States Environmental Protection Agency. It was backed by many international NGOs and countries. In Vietnam, the ICCD was first held on the 23rd of September, 2000 by the International Marinelife Alliance (IMA), forerunner of the MCD, at Nha Trang and Khanh Hoa. Since then, it has spread across many other regions of the country.

More than one hundred students from the Tourism Department and Vocational College and one hundred members of Youth Union in Dien Duong worked with the Nam Hai Resort staff to clean up the five kilometer beach at the Nam Hai Resort.

Despite the blazing sun, they all did a great job. On behalf of The Nam Hai Resort, Mr. Walter Hess, the Resident Manager said: “You all spent your Sunday cleaning up the beach. That’s terrific, thank-you! I hope that your work will convince local people that they must protect our environment”.
 
By their participation, DTU students are learning new things and how they can share their lives and skills with the local community.
