Fatherless Student Who Had to Work as a Factory Worker Receives 90% Four-Year Tuition Scholarship from DTU
Moved by the difficult circumstances and determination of Nguyen Thi Nhu, a young woman from Da Nang who had long dreamed of attending university but was unable to do so because her family could not afford the tuition, DTU has decided to award her a scholarship covering 90% of her tuition for the entire four-year program.

On the morning of September 29, DTU in Da Nang contacted Tuoi Tre Newspaper’s representative office in Central Vietnam to announce its decision to award Nguyen Thi Nhu, a first-year Literature and Journalism student, a scholarship covering 90% of her tuition for the entire program.
A “huge” reward for her determination to pursue her education
According to DTU, the scholarship recognizes Nhu's perseverance in overcoming academic difficulties and her strong desire to pursue higher education, while also helping ease her financial burden.
The university has informed Nhu of the decision. Speaking with a reporter, Nguyen Thi Nhu also confirmed that she had received a phone call from a Duy Tan University staff member, informing her of the good news.
“I went from starting university with overwhelming anxiety to having Tuoi Tre reporters visit my home to learn about my circumstances, and then receiving support from the Supporting Students to School scholarship program, which gave me greater confidence as I began university.
Now, with the additional news that 90% of my tuition will be covered, everything feels like a dream.
There is no reason for me not to keep trying. I will do my very best in my studies and strive to achieve the best results possible,” Nhu said.
With DTU's support, Nguyen Thi Nhu now feels confident in pursuing her university education.

Previously, after an article about Nhu was published around the time of the Supporting Students to School scholarship ceremony in Hoi An on September 27, the first-year student received significant additional support.
She received a VND 15 million scholarship and a new laptop from an organization supporting the Supporting Students to School scholarship program.
In another unexpected gesture, during the scholarship ceremony, Mr. Truong Hoang Nguyen, Executive Director of Universal Alloy Corporation Vietnam (UAC Vietnam, Da Nang), presented Như with VND 20 million in cash.
The money was enough for Nhu to purchase a motorbike for transportation. It was the first motorbike Nhu and her mother had ever owned; until then, they had only had bicycles to get around.
Earlier, Mr. Duong Thai Son, Director of Nam Long Packaging Company in Ho Chi Minh City, had provided Nhu with a VND 15 million scholarship, enabling her to complete the enrollment procedures at DTU.
Accepted to university, student pauses studies after tuition extension refusal
Nguyen Thi Nhu lives with her mother, Nguyen Thi Bich Hanh, and her two younger siblings, one of whom has a disability. When Nhu was very young, her father suffered an accident and subsequently lost contact with the family. She was then sent to live with her grandparents in Que Son, Da Nang, who raised her and supported her education.
Nhu’s mother later moved to Da Nang to work at a stainless steel workshop. She eventually remarried and had two more daughters, but the marriage was unhappy and ended in separation.
For years, Ms. Hanh and her children have been living in a temporary shelter on vacant land beside the Da Co Canal in Hoa Khanh Ward, Da Nang.
In 2025, Nhu was admitted to university in Da Nang. However, after her repeated requests for a tuition payment extension were denied, she had to put her university dream on hold, spending the year working alongside her mother at the workshop.
In the last admission season, Nhu applied to DTU and was accepted. With VND 7.3 million saved on her own and a high-interest loan her mother took out, she was finally able to pay the fees and begin her university studies.
Nhu’s arduous journey to university, published in Tuoi Tre, has touched many readers.
At noon on September 29, when learning that DTU would cover 90% of her daughter's tuition, Ms. Hanh burst into tears, saying she had never imagined such incredible luck for her child.
“I’m certain she will work hard in her studies, start a career, and eventually give back to others in need - just as she is being helped now. I will make sure to remind her to cherish this generosity and live a life worthy of it,” Ms. Hanh said.
