Students, lecturers, researchers, and administrators from across Vietnam gathered at Duy Tan University (DTU) on the morning of August 5, 2026, for the opening ceremony of the 6th National Student Biology Olympiad. Beyond providing contestants with an opportunity to compete, the event serves as a forum for academic exchange and networking, fosters enthusiasm for scientific research, and contributes to the advancement of biology amid educational reform and international integration.

A total of 164 outstanding contestants representing 31 universities nationwide are taking part in the 6th National Student Biology Olympiad at DTU. The event is jointly organized by the Vietnam Biological Association and DTU, under the auspices of the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, and is officially recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Prof. Dr. Le Tran Binh, President of the Vietnam Biological Association and Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee, said: “Through the National Student Biology Olympiad, we hope to bring together young talents and inspire greater enthusiasm for learning and scientific research among students nationwide. The Olympiad offers an academic forum where students can meet, exchange ideas, and engage in friendly competition. It also enables us to identify and nurture young talents in Biology, thereby helping build a highly qualified workforce for the country’s scientific, technological, and economic development.”

Under the theme “Elevating Biology, Breaking New Ground with AI in the Digital Age,” the 6th National Student Biology Olympiad is not only a prestigious academic competition aimed at identifying young talent and strengthening research capacity, but also a foundation for promoting the application of advanced technologies - particularly Artificial Intelligence -in teaching and practical applications in Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries, Medicine and Pharmacy, Industry, and Environment.

People’s Teacher Prof. Dr. Tran Huu Dang, DTU Vice Provost, Rector of the DTU College of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Chair of the Organizing Committee of the 6th National Student Biology Olympiad, said: “Biology is currently experiencing one of the most dynamic periods of development in its history. Artificial Intelligence is supporting protein-structure prediction with unprecedented accuracy. CRISPR gene-editing technology is being applied to the treatment of an expanding range of diseases. The Human Cell Atlas is becoming increasingly comprehensive, while single-cell sequencing, multi-omics technologies, synthetic biology, and precision medicine are opening up entirely new approaches to research and healthcare. AI does not replace biologists. Instead, it serves as an intelligent collaborator that shortens research timelines, improves accuracy, and accelerates scientific discoveries that would previously have taken many years to achieve. In this context, students of Biology today need more than a solid foundation of specialized knowledge. They must also develop interdisciplinary thinking, digital competencies, data-analysis skills, and an innovative mindset to address major challenges facing humanity, including healthcare, food security, biodiversity conservation, climate change, and sustainable development.”

Trinh Nguyen Hong Minh, a member of the DTU team, said: “Participating in the National Student Biology Olympiad is a great honor and a tremendous source of motivation for me. I look forward to learning from faculty members and teams from other universities, as well as experiencing a high-quality academic competition. I believe that combining Biological knowledge with Artificial Intelligence will lead to many breakthroughs in the future. The National Student Biology Olympiad therefore provides us with a valuable opportunity to challenge ourselves, assess our knowledge, and strengthen our critical-thinking skills, thereby building a solid foundation to meet the future demands of the field.”

Le Hoai Nam, a member of the team from the University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, shared: “My teammates and I spent months preparing intensively for the competition. We strengthened our foundational knowledge, kept up to date with emerging research directions in Biology, and developed our practical skills. With this thorough preparation, I hope our team will perform well in both the theoretical and practical components of the competition. We also look forward to learning from and interacting with outstanding students from universities across the country at the 6th National Student Biology Olympiad.”

In the coming days, the teams will take part in the theoretical and practical examinations with determination and enthusiasm. The 6th National Student Biology Olympiad promises to feature many impressive performances while fostering a passion for learning, scientific research, and discovery among Vietnamese students.
