According to the motto: “Every drop of blood you give could save a life,” hundreds of units of blood from DTU students over the past few years have been sent immediately to local hospitals. In conjunction, DTU has recently launched a free dental check-up and treatment program.
DTU students volunteer to donate blood for hospital patients
DTU saves Lives
On September 15, DTU held a Blood Donation Day, where lecturers, staff and students gave 460 blood units, which were immediately sent to the Hue Regional Blood Transfusion Center at Hue Central Hospital for distribution to hospitals all the way from Quang Binh to Quang Nam province.
Hue Central Hospital treats patients from all over the country and this was the second time in 2023 that the hospital has collaborated with DTU in blood donation programs. DTU sent 600 units in 2022 and over 300 units in early 2023, and the event is held two to three times a year. On arrival, the Hue Regional Blood Transfusion Center tests for five blood-borne infectious diseases, namely Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, Fever and HIV.
If infection occurs, the center advises the specific blood donor to take a follow-up examination. In addition, those who donate blood will receive a certificate, and if they ever require a blood transfusion themselves in the future, they will be reimbursed for the amount of blood they have already donated.
Nguyen Tan Long is a second-year student majoring in the Doctor of Odonto-Stomatology program and said: “This is the 5th time I have given blood. I was a little nervous the first time, but the thought that my small donation would help sick patients to recover strengthened me. In fact, donating blood benefits not only the recipient but also the donor. The body works to replenish blood loss and stimulate the production of new blood cells, making the donors healthier.”
DTU also held a free dental treatment campaign
In addition to its academic activities, the DTU Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology encourages people to maintain good oral health, so that they can work and study more effectively. Free dental treatment programs have been introduced at DTU and in remote areas of Vietnam. Since August 2022, the DTU Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology and DTU Medical Stimulation Center (MedSIM) have jointly held an “Oral Health Day” for DTU staff, lecturers and their relatives.
On September 26, lecturers and students visited the Xa Ba Primary School in the Dong Giang district of Quang Nam province and gave 285 students a free dental checkup. 219 children had Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) applied, which is a liquid approved for preventing tooth cavities from forming, growing, and spreading to other teeth. At the end, DTU presented 285 gifts to Xa Ba Primary school students and 40 to teachers.
Volunteer medical check-ups and treatment programs at the Bha Lêê commune (in Quang Nam province) and Hope Village (in Danang)
In July and August, DTU provided free checkups and treatment in the Bha Lêê commune in Quang Nam province and to the staff and children of Hope Village in Danang, with 914 checkups, 837 fillings, 577cleanings. SDF was used to treat 380 children’s teeth, 118 baby teeth were extracted and medicine distributed to 112 patients, as well as 1,200 gifts, including toothpaste, toothbrushes and hand soap. Additionally, 45 gifts, including rice, blankets, and clothes were given to disadvantaged families in Bha Lêê, The cost of services implemented in the two campaigns was 500 million VND and the total value of the gifts was 80 million.
DTU Lecturers, staff, and students donate gifts
DTU Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology provides dental check-ups locally because they know that Tay Giang is where the most CoTu people live and medical facilities are limited there. At the same time, hundreds of orphans and disabled children reside in Hope Village and so far, thanks to investment in modern facilities and equipment, DTU’s campaigns have been highly successful.
