The Vietnamese Music Talent Contest is held by Huy Hoang Entertainment Joint Stock Company and VTC Digital Television Station. This was the third season of the contest, with the participation of over 500 candidates. After the preliminary and semi-final rounds, the top fifteen candidates nationwide in the three genres of Bolero, Folk, and Young Music were selected to compete in the final at the Voice of Vietnam Theatre in Hanoi.
With a passion for singing and incessant efforts, DTU student Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa overcame hundreds of candidates to secure a spot among the fifteen finalists. Kim Thoa’s rendition of the “Weaving Nettle” song left a deep impression on the judges and the audience at the Voice of Vietnam Theatre. Through her sweet and emotional voice, Kim Thoa skillfully conveyed the sentiments of the songwriter. The 2nd runner-up prize in the folk music genre is a well-deserved recognition of Kim Thoa’s talent and dedication in the third season of the 2023 Vietnamese Music Talent Contest.

Kim Thoa said: “In the preliminary round, I performed the song “Thach Bi Son,” composed by Ngoc Quang, and in the semi-final, I sang “Dawn of the Land,” composed by People’s Artist Cao Huu Nhac. Both songs are written about the place I’m from, Phu Yen province. Although I had previously sung these two songs in other contests in Phu Yen province, I decided to perform them again because I think that with each rendition, I can infuse different emotions. Consequently, I sang these songs as if it was the first time I sang them.
“For the final, I chose to sing “Weaving Nettle,” composed by Ngo Dai. Singer Tran Thu Ha has successfully performed this song before. This song presents a big challenge for me as it requires the singer to demonstrate difficult technique. However, I firmly believed that with the determination to overcome my limitations and the effort I put in, I would definitely succeed. In the final, I felt a bit anxious as my performance was a solo act, while the others had been with auxiliary dancers. However, I perceived it as an opportunity to discover my stage ability and strive my best to express the feelings of the song.”
Ever since she was a child, Kim Thoa sang wherever and whenever she could. When asked about her aspirations for the future, she would promptly respond, “I want to be a singer.” Kim Thoa says: “I often hear stories from my parents and aunts that, at the age of three, I insisted on joining my sister onstage while she was performing. Through primary, secondary, and high school, I actively participated in singing competitions at the school, district, and province levels. Although I am not currently pursuing a music major, music still holds a significant place in my life. Without music, my life would be dull. In the past, I participated in several singing competitions in Phu Yen province. In 2020, I won second prize in the “Phu Yen’s Talented Pupils and Students” competition and became the champion of the “Dream Kite” contest.”

“My dream is to become an event planner in the future. I aspire to shine both onstage and backstage. Therefore, I chose to study this major to pursue my passion for singing while acquiring knowledge and skills related to entertainment,” says Kim Thoa
During her years at university, Kim Thoa has been accepting invitations to perform at various places, satisfying her passion and earning extra income. She also actively participates in many extra-curricular activities and volunteers for various projects. Currently, Kim Thoa serves as the sub-leader of Junko in Danang, a non-profit organization that acts as a bridge between the Junko Association in Japan and Vietnamese children in Quang Nam and Danang. She has dedicated three years to this role.
Kim Thoa constantly strives to make her dreams come true. Hopefully, Kim Thoa will maintain her passion for music and continue to achieve even greater success in the future.
