On May 12, the DTU School of Computer Science (SCS) held a Student Research Conference, to promote research activities among students, to allow them to learn by exploring new topics and applying that knowledge to real-world problem-solving. Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Gia Nhu, Vice-Provost of DTU SCS, lecturers and students attended.

Professor Nhu said: “The SCS student research conference allows students to cultivate essential research skills, highlight their creative ideas, learn from each other and broaden their professional experience. The best projects will be chosen for presentation at the conference, following the guidance of their lecturers on developing optimal solutions for real-world situations.”
Ten research projects were submitted by SCS students this year. These include: an application to build and manage a football field; a driver drowsiness detection system; an online hygienic food market; and a facial recognition system to identify hotel guests.
Certificates are awarded to the best projects
The judges were impressed by the implementation of the projects, the application of classroom knowledge in real time situations, and the fluent presentation skills. Research also enables students to learn fundamental methodologies and practice writing reports, which may help them internationally in the future. Certificates were awarded to the best projects:
First prize:
- Generating automatic image descriptions in Vietnamese, for sports images
Two second prizes:
- Building an intrusion alarm system
- The SCIMA card game
Two third prizes:
- Building a driver drowsiness detection system
- Facial recognition of hotel guests, using a multiple-model machine learning method
Three consolation prizes:
- Classification of terrain images, by combining neural network and random forest
- Building a website and ordering applications with Momo/Paypal integration
- Using the Laravel Framework to build an online hygienic food market
