On June 1st, Times Higher Education (THE) announced the ranking of Asian universities in 2022 (THE Asia University Rankings 2022). Accordingly, Ton Duc Thang University ranked 73rd while Duy Tan University is listed 91st, which marks the first time ever that Vietnamese universities are included in the Asia top 100.
Besides, Vietnam has three others universities ranked. They are Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi, placed in the 301–350 range; Vietnam National University in HCM City, 401–500; and Hanoi University of Science and Technology in the 500+ group. Of note, the University of Danang is listed as a reporter, which is an educational institution that provided data but is not eligible for ranking.
The THE Asia University Rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (25%); research (30%); citations (30%); international outlook (7.5%); and industry income (7.5%).
With this assessment, universities with strengths in research have an advantage. Among the Vietnamese institutions, VNU achieved the highest score in the area of teaching with 22.3. Meanwhile, Ton Duc Thang University has a citation criteria score of 99.3/100 and Duy Tan University even achieved absolute perfection in this criterion. VNU HCMC maintained its strength in industry income with 40.8.
Ranking and evaluation scores of Vietnamese universities in THE list
This year's Asia University Rankings list nearly 616 higher education institutions from 30 Asian countries and territories, an increase of 65 schools compared to the previous year. The top five positions remain unchanged from 2021: Tsinghua and Beijing Universities (China), National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).
In Southeast Asia, in addition to the two Singaporean schools in the top five Vietnamese universities, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines are also represented. Compared to 2021, Malaysia overtook Thailand to become the country with most ranked universities at 18, of which the University of Malaya has the highest ranking, at 55. Thailand has 17, Indonesia 14, and the Philippines 2.
THE has been ranking world universities since 2004. In April THE released their Impact Rankings, which assess universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which call for global action to build a peaceful and prosperous society since it measures the contributions of educational institutions on social development and environmental protection. Seven Vietnamese education institutions were on the list: Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ranked in the 601-800 range), Ton Duc Thang University (601-800), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (601-800), Phenikaa University (801-1000), Duy Tan University (601-800), National Economics University (601-800) and FPT (801-1000).
