The annual American Graphic Design Awards is one of the top fifteen design competitions, held by the professional Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) magazine, which was first published in 1963. Eleven thousand submissions in 28 distinct categories were received this year from design houses, advertising agencies, freelancers and college students worldwide. Winners will receive an embossed certificate and their work will be published in the 58th edition of the GDUSA magazine, offline and online.
Khanh Hien used Adobe Illustrator to design an attractive multicolored logo, with the word “Obai” in blue and yellow, with a purple background. She explained: "When I had the idea of creating a logo for a perfume with a gentle and natural aroma of fresh herbs, flowers and wood, I was immediately reminded of the Central Highlands of Vietnam. I’m particularly interested in the languages of the Ede, Bana and Jrai ethnic communities, so I decided to convey this traditional feeling. Luckily, I had heard the song “Tinh khuc O bai,” composed by Trinh Cong Son, and I named the Obai perfume after it. I hope that all those wearing the perfume will remain innocent, attractive, elegant and mysterious, just like the great Central Highlands."

Khanh Hien was encouraged to enter the contest by the DTU Board, lecturer Tran Thanh Binh, Head of Graphic Design in the Faculty of Architecture and Arts, and mentor Nguyen Tri Phuong Dong, who is in charge of Logo Design. She added: "This was my first international contest, and it enabled me to broaden my experience and discover myself. Winning the trophy was a source of great pride and has motivated me to work hard to achieve my objective of becoming a professional graphic designer, specializing in book illustration and 2D-3D montage.”
Last year, Nguyen Thi Thuy Tram, another DTU Graphic Design student, was awarded a trophy and a Certificate of Merit for her distinctive logo entitled ‘Anna’s Underwear Boutique’.
These successes in important international graphic design competitions have demonstrated both the high quality of an education at DTU and the talents of the students in this field.
