The Top 5 Vietnamese Universities in the 2022 Emerging Economies University Rankings

On October 19, Times Higher Education (THE) announced the 2022 Emerging Economies University rankings. Since last year, two more Vietnamese universities, Ton Duc Thang and Duy Tan University have been added, ranked 82 and 107 respectively, out of 698 in total, up from 606 last year.

Countries and regions represented in the 2022 THE Emerging Economies University rankings  
 
The 2021 rankings only included institutions in countries classified by the London Stock Exchange’s FTSE Group as “advanced emerging”, “secondary emerging” or “frontier”. However, different criteria have been applied to reflect university development priorities universities in emerging economies.
 
1) Ton Duc Thang University: ranked 82nd  
2) DTU: 107th 
3) VNU in Hanoi: 301-350
4) VNU in HCM city: 401-500
5) Hanoi University of Science & Technology: 501+
 
There are some changes in this year’s rankings. VNU in HCMC remains firmly in the 401-500 group, however Ton Duc Thang University comes in at 82, the highest in Vietnam. 
 
China still dominates the list, with 51 institutions in the top 200, including the top five places. Russia has 17 institutions ranked in the top 200, overtaking Taiwan with 12 and second only to China. South Africa drops out of this elite group.

The five performance criteria are: Teaching, the learning environment: 30%; Research, by volume, income and reputation: 30%; Citations, research influence: 20%; internationalism, staff, students and research: 10%; and industry income, knowledge transfer: 10%.
