Due to staff shortages during the ongoing pandemic, medical, pharmacy and nursing students volunteered to step in and, on July 9th, sixty DTU Health Science students were chosen to assist at the Lien Chieu Health Center, where they helped the locals to complete medical declarations and procedures prior to vaccination.
In addition, they worked at the Hai Van pass checkpoint, which is one of several major hotspots with large numbers of people leaving the city for their hometowns to avoid infection.

There was much to do, on three eight-hour shifts per day. Vuong Ngoc Thanh Thao, a third-year medical student, said: “We are happy to make a small contribution to controlling the epidemic in the city. Sometimes we feel exhausted because of the huge number of people waiting for Covid-19 testing, but nobody complains, and we are unafraid of difficulties. The work is hard, but we want to volunteer on the frontline so that the pandemic can soon be overcome in Danang.”

When we asked the students if their families encouraged them to volunteer, we received several different responses, for example: “My parents were worried, however I signed up before I asked their permission and was happy but nervous. Also:"At first, my parents were not supportive because I haven’t been vaccinated yet, but I tried my best to persuadethem, and they then allowed me to volunteer.”

Thanks to all our dedicated students for their contributions. Handling the pandemic is complex butyour youthful energy, enthusiasm and solidarity will soon help eradicate the virus and life will come back to normal.
