When Challenges Become Opportunities for DTU Nursing students

Nurses gain the trust of patients and their families at health centers and nursing homes by helping them directly, talking with them, ensuring that nothing goes wrong and watching over them as they recover. Today, there are not enough nurses to handle hospital needs however, as the aging population and number of patients continues to grow, day-by-day. This has led to a nursing shortage in many countries.
The DTU Health Sciences Faculty is focusing strongly on Nursing education and is ready to welcome more new Nursing students in 2018.

Many countries face critical nursing shortages

According to the General office for Population & Family Planning, Vietnam is among the countries with the fastest rate of aging in the world, with an estimated 10.1 million older adults, 2 million of whom are over 80. Many developed countries worldwide, especially Japan, face similar concerns. Japan has 32.7 million over-65s, representing 25.75% of the total population and 700,000 more healthcare workers are required over the coming decade.

Looking for skilled Vietnamese nurses

To meet the growing demand for healthcare workers, the Vietnamese Ministry of Health has planned ways of expanding the workforce. Many universities now offer Nursing programs and the situation has been gradually improving. Other countries, including Germany, Japan and Sweden, come to Vietnam to look for qualified nurses, broadening career opportunities for graduates here.

Recently, several foreign representatives have visited DTU to investigate long-term partnerships in Nursing education and recruitment. The university has agreements on career orientation, training and employment with the Seirei Social Welfare Community (SEIRE) in Japan and with Halmstad University in Sweden.

DTU has another agreement with the local Kinki branch of the Japanese National Council for the Elderly and Blind, where Kinki will offer internships for DTU students and graduates to improve their Nursing ability and Japanese language. Ms. Yuko Kamata from the SEIRE Human Resources Department said: “After visiting DTU, we have a high regard for the university and students. Currently, one thousand highly-qualified, caring, responsive and dynamic Vietnamese nurses work in Japan.”

In addition, DTU also has an agreement with Fooyin University in Taiwan to offer a Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN). Graduates will be conferred an MSN degree by FooYin University.
