DTU Translates and Publishes James Stewart’s Calculus Textbook

Duy Tan University, in conjunction with the Cengage publishing house, copyrighted and translated into Vietnamese the “Calculus” textbook, which is a world-famous publication on advanced mathematics, by James Stewart, the Canadian mathematician. After two years of translation and editing, the first part is now available in Vietnam.

The “Calculus 1” textbook translated by DTU is now available in Vietnam

The textbook contains 17 chapters and is used at universities worldwide. It is Cengage’s bestselling mathematics textbook. In contrast to other traditional mathematics textbooks, which focus on theoretical, pure mathematics, James Stewart’s “Calculus” links the theory in natural and social sciences to practical examples in everyday life, making it more stimulating to read. The significance of this textbook is explained in detail by Professor Vu Thai Luan from the University of California, in Merced, in his article at: http://vnexpress.net/tin-tuc/giao-duc/soan-giao-trinh-dai-hoc-the-nao-cho-hap-dan-3367558.html.

Over the past ten years, as DTU is expanding promoting educational partnerships with well-known  universities worldwide, particularly in the USA, the university has been encouraging  its lecturers to integrate the latest international textbooks into their curricula and lesson plans. As a result, one of the mathematics lecturers discovered James Stewart’s textbook and made it their chief reference book in innovative advanced mathematics courses in Engineering and Technology programs.

“The book is the result of two years and long hours of dedicated hard work by translators at the DTU Center of Study Materials and lecturers of Mathematics at DTU Natural Sciences Faculty,” said Mr. Truong Hoang Anh Tuan, the Director. “In order to integrate it into our Vietnamese curricula, the textbook has been divided into two parts. Part 1 contains the first eleven chapters of the original. The second part is expected to be published in September 2016.”

Part 1 covers: Functions and Limits; Derivatives; Applications of Differentiation; Integrals; Applications of Integration; Inverse Functions; Techniques of Integration; Further Applications of Integration; Differential Equations; Parametric Equations; Polar Coordinates and Infinite Sequences and Series. Each chapter opens with guidance on the content, accompanied by an illustration and a concise summary on the practical applications to be covered.

At the end of each chapter, examples and rules for problem solutions are suggested, to claify any outstanding issues. Exercises are provided to broaden the outlook of the readers. The textbook also contains an appendix and notes to relate to the mathematics they learned in high school.

Dr. Dang Van Cuong, Dean of the DTU Faculty of Natural Sciences, a mathematician who oversaw the proofreading of the book explained, “The textbook integrates Vietnamese university education with advanced international university systems, alleviating the deficiency of applications in advanced mathematics in our country. DTU has signed collaborative agreements to transfer established programs from several well-known universities around the world, therefore, using this textbook in our teaching will now ensure improved consistency in teaching at DTU.”

According to Ms.Tran Thi Thuy Kieu, Director of the DTU Library, the “Calculus 1” textbook is now available there for the use of researchers, lecturers, staff and students. The textbook is also on sale there at a reasonable price for students wishing to purchase it.

In the past, DTU has already successfully translated and published other famous books in many fields, providing lecturers and students with access to rich and varied works. Among these are included “The Art of Public Speaking”, by Stephen E. Lucas, “Human Resource Management” by John M. Ivancevich, and “Business Ethics”, by Laura P. Hartman.
