Distinguished Teacher Le Cong Co Awarded the Title of Hero of Labor

On March 18th, Distinguished Teacher Le Cong Co, DTU President and Provost, received the title “Hero of Labor”. He was the first academic in the private higher education sector in Vietnam to be honored with the award.

Deputy-President Nguyen Thi Doan, the Deputy Minister of MOET, Pham Manh Hung, local government officials and representatives from universities in the Central Region attended the ceremony. 

Distinguished Teacher Le Cong Co was born in 1941. He joined the Vietnamese Revolutionary Movement at the age of 13 and became a party member at 24. During the 22 years he participated in the Revolution, he was awarded the first-class Resistance War Medal, the first-class American Resistance War Medal and other honors by the Party and State.
 
After Reunification, he served in several important positions, including Deputy-Chairperson of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front, in Quang Nam-Danang province, and General Director of the Quang Nam-Danang Tourism Authority. He retired in 1993 and started to pursue his dream of founding an innovative, humanitarian, new university. 

With the approval of MOET, he established the private English Language, Electronics and Informatics Centers. In 1992, he and his colleagues presented a proposal to found the first private university in the Central Region. The application was approved, and, on November 11th, 1994, the Prime Minister signed a Decision to establish Duy Tan University. 

At the awards ceremony, DTU was also honored with Prime Ministerial Emulation banners and Dr. Le Nguyen Bao, DTU Vice-Provost, received a Prime Ministerial Certificate of Merit. 
 
With five strategic objectives, including the teaching of English to faculty and staff, computerization, professionalization, internationalization and energizing top management and faculty, Distinguished Teacher Le Cong Co has made DTU, one of the biggest private universities in the Central Region, recognized nationally. DTU has also become the only private university in Vietnam to offer PhD programs in Computer Science and Business Administration.
