The First Public Debate at DTU

On January 15th, DTU held the Final round of the first public debate for students of the Critical Thinking class. One first, one second, one third and three consolation prizes were awarded to the most convincing students.

The interesting and stimulating debate was organized by the DTU Public Debating Club, to allow students to exchange ideas about vital daily issues, to develop their critical thinking and other skills. Under the supervision of Professor Barbara G. Howell, the debate drew in a lot of students from the Critical Thinking class and four out of eleven teams were selected to go on to the Finals.

Professor Howell said: “I would like to thank all of you for joining the DTU Public Debating Club. Thank you for your hard work and the dedicated support of lecturers of the faculties of Medicine, Tourism and Hospitality, Foreign Languages and the staff of the DTU library. I am so happy and proud and I know that the debates will improve your communication skills which are vital in your future lives and careers.”

With their new knowledge, problem-solving and English skills, students created an interesting, competitive environment for the Finals. Winning over the judges with her confidence and persuasive debating methods, Huynh Kim Y Thao came first with the topic “Unnecessary Aesthetic Surgery Should Be Banned”. Nguyen Doan Khanh Trang came second with the same topic. Huynh Minh Trang won third prize with “Marriage between Vietnamese Women and Foreigners Should Be Prohibited”. Also, three consolation prizes were won by Phung Nhat Hoang and Do Nhu Kinh with the topic “Vietnamese Students Should Be Required to Wear Uniforms” and to Le Tu Dung, also on “Marriage between Vietnamese Women and Foreigners Should Be Prohibited”.
