Their ability to overcome life’s obstacles

Each year, DTU welcomes thousands of applicants, bringing with them mixed feelings of joy, uncertainty, enthusiasm and hope, along with some unlikely coincidences.

With a score of 27/30 in the 2015 National Final Exam in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Nguyen Thi Le, from Quang Nam, was not sure whether she would be able to attend university or not. She comes from a poor family. Her mother worked hard as a farmer and looked after her children at the same time, but then become disabled. All through her high school years, Le studied as hard as she possibly could. Her teacher used to tell her that the only way to get out of poverty and hardship was by studying diligently. With those words in mind, Le focused on her education and she won a provincial consolation prize in Chemistry in 2014-2015.

Tam also heard that most IT students at DTU are offered employment at companies in their third or fourth years and that DTU students have been winning several national and international IT contests. She was lucky when her friend, who had just enrolled in DTU’s On-Site Study-Abroad program, introduced her to the university. After talking to DTU advisors and visiting the new facilities, Le still had another big surprise awaiting her. She was immediately awarded a full scholarship, worth 800 billion VND, for the On-Site Study-Abroad program. Coincidence and intention worked hand-in-hand to significantly reduce the financial burden on her family and provided a bright start to her entrance to the university.

Pham Minh Anh, from Danang, scored 24.25/30 and comes from a successful family. His parents are both doctors. His older brother is studying at the Hue College of Medicine and Pharmacy. His parents recommended that he should apply to DTU to study to become a General Practitioner. Minh Anh said: “I hope that eventually I can go abroad for advanced medical training and access the most modern medical techniques worldwide. I am very impressed with the investment that DTU has made in the General Practitioner program. They have collaborated with universities, including the University of Illinois in Chicago and the University of Pittsburgh to develop an advanced study program, all in English. We will devote part of the first year to learning the English language and natural sciences in English as a foundation.”

DTU’s scholarship and tuition fee incentives for students in Social Sciences and Humanities, including the policy of reducing the fee by 50% for all four years, has attracted many highly-qualified applicants. Nguyen Thi Nhu Ngoc, from Quang Nam, scored 25.5/30 in Literature, History and Geography. Since attending high school, she has been working at various local companies after school, to earn money for her education and family. She repaired clothing and made raincoats. Her ability as the elder daughter to overcome the problems of a farming family was demonstrated in her choice of university and major. Nhu Ngoc signed up for the Literature and Journalism program at DTU, with the ambition of becoming a skilled journalist in the near future.
