“Connect to Love” with DTU Students

On 26th March, 2011, more than fifty DTU Student Club volunteers organized a trip to Dai Son in Quang Nam to do charity work there, in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Youth Union (1931 - 2011).

The two-day trip was aimed to help poor people in this remote region, so it took them long time to get there, including travel by bus, boat and even on foot. Mr. Tran Van Vi, the leader of the Club said: “Despite the cold weather, we tried our best to reach out to the people here as we know they really need our help. With donations from Youth Club members and other organizations, we were able to present 70 gifts to needy people”.

Most were given to people on the first day. The volunteers also repaired a house for Ms. Thu, from one of the poorest families in Dai Son. At night, they celebrated the anniversary of the Vietnamese Youth Union. The music show was greatly enjoyed by all the residents of Dai Son, and, at 10 pm, all the lights were turned off in recognition of Earth Hour 2011. Hundreds of candles were lit and the FDTU volunteers and people of Dai Son prayed for peace and prosperity. “We are praying for everyone, especially the Japanese. We hope you will overcome the difficulties after the severe earthquake”.

On the second day, the volunteers continued to repair other houses. Also, two hundred gifts of clothes and notebooks were donated to children by the DTU students. Nguyen Thi Phuong, an FDTU member said: “I have participated in many charitable trips. Most of the children in these areas are very poor and really need our help. The more we are concerned about them, the more hope they have to pursue their dreams of getting a good education. That’s the thing we most appreciate after each trip”.

The trip ended with mixed feelings for most of the FDTU members. Their current motto is “willing to share with the society”, so this trip was a very meaningful way for them to commemorate their 80th anniversary.
