DTU made impressive achievements at the 12th National Festival of Architecture, winning 4 first prizes, 2 seconds, 5 thirds and the Global Group prize. The team of 41 students and 9 lecturers combined their creativity, unique and novel ideas and excellent presentation and communications skills to compete in the six sections:

In Quick Design A and B, students Hoang Thi Duyen and Le Thi Vang won two first prizes with their intriguing ideas about the future of Danang, linking past and present to engender a youthful, dynamic and modern future. DTU students also won one second and two third prizes in the same section.

In Art Drawing, Nguyen Anh Tai won second prizes in the Individual and Group contests. His work entitled “Bach Dang Street on a Sunny Day” highlighted the Danang General Science Library and the Novotel Hotel, and his “Danang
Thirsting for Youth” picture showed the east bank of the Han River with the Administrative Center and the Port of Danang at Sunset. He used a palette of bright, fresh colors to illustrate the beauty of the city.

In the same section, Nguyen Dang Tuan won two third prizes, with the drawing “Opposite”, depicting the Dalat Cathedral, and “Span”, featuring the Hue Overpass.

In Photography, Tran Chanh Bin Rin won a second prize using minimalist and frame-in-frame techniques, to capture everyday scenes of a security guard at work, an old man riding a bicycle along a peaceful Bach Dang street and a cyclist crossing the Thuan Phuoc Bridge, leaning over the handlebars.

In the Parametric Shaping section, DTU won a third prize with their work “Waves”. The team used everyday objects like formex, mica, polystyrene pellets and balls and applied their skills to create shapes based on 4.0 technology algorithms to create continuous sea waves symbolizing the human psyche.

Their work carried the message “Let our minds’ contents flow out to the sea, back into the deep ocean of our psyche, to feel the vastness of our souls and sink all our afflictions into the deep water.”

In Sand Sculpture, students won a third prize, employing only sand and water to create an interesting exhibit entitled “Arms Wide Open”, stretching from north to south, from Hanoi to Danang to Saigon. During the journey, we can experience the beauty of Vietnam, with its endless mountain ranges and green rivers and seas.

In the most important Global Group section, a prize was awarded to the DTU Team 8 of Hoang Thi Duyen and Pham Thi Kim Ngan.

“This is the second time I’ve taken part in the Architecture Festival, and this year has been the most successful,” said a joyful Nguyen Anh Tai, who won two first prizes in Art Drawing section. “The Architecture Festival and the Loa Thanh awards are the two most important contests dedicated to architecture students.”

“I’ve been able to practice, put my abilities to use and network to exchange information and experiences with other students from all over the country. My awards will encourage me and other DTU students to continually study harder, to foster our love for architecture, which I am now attempting.”

At the closing of a successful 2020 Festival, Vietnam Association of Architects Chairman D.Arch Phan Dang Son and DTU Provost Dr. Le Nguyen Bao presented the festival banner and cup to Associate Professor Nguyen Vu Phuong, Provost of the Mien Trung University of Civil Engineering, who will host the 13th festival next year for students to discover and create attractive, richly functional architectural works for Vietnam.
