From May 10 to 12, the eighth Dental Scientific & Continuing Education Conference was held, this year in Can Tho. The objective was to update participants on the latest information and perspectives in dentistry, and to share details on advanced techniques and technologies applied in daily practice, in patient treatment.
With its topic “Dentistry in the Digital Age,” the conference was attended by 800 leading Odonto-stomatology delegates from Vietnam and abroad, ranging from dentists to university students. Nineteen papers were submitted by students from 9 universities, and teams from the DTU College of Medicine & Pharmacy won a second and a consolation prize.
DTU students win second prize in the Clinical section
Experts from Vietnam and other countries in ASEAN exchanged information on current issues, like dental implants; orthodontics; endodontic treatment; new materials in dentistry; maxillofacial surgery; occlusion; general dentistry; dentistry on children; and cosmetic dentistry. Presentations were made on reconstructive maxillofacail surgery and aesthetic dentistry, including total temporomandibular joint replacement; one-stage ear shaping; and digital applications for mandibular shaping, followed by two additional clinical practice sessions on dental implants and endodontics.
At the student forum, representatives from nine Vietnamese universities reported on their research projects, including two DTU projects in the Clinical and the Prevention sections, by students from the College of Medicine and Pharmacy, who spoke entirely in English. The jury recognized their projects for their high practical value, and were impressed with the confident presentation styles and excellent responses to their questions. Winners were:
- Second prize: “Research into and the manufacture of suture models for maxillofacial surgery” by Tran Gia Bao, Le Thi Thuy Duong, and Hoang Gia Khanh. They researched the manufacture of a silicone skin model with a lower price than can currently be found on the market, with high durability and similarity to real skin, to be used in teaching the suturing of oral and maxillofacial wounds. The quality of the skin patch was confirmed by highly experienced surgeons, who were able to actually touch a demo version. They confirmed that it had a realistic appearance, close-to-real anatomical structure, and good elasticity.
- Consolation prize: “Current state of caries and related factors among 2023 DTU students” by Nguyen Hoang Minh Tam, Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang, Le Duc Anh Tai, and Le Pham Quynh Nhu. The research surveyed the 402 first-year students participating in the Oral Health Day examination, organized by the Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology. The group analyzed the status of caries and factors related to them, and determined that family finances condition and dental health behavior are significantly related to caries in students (p<0.05). This led them to suggest measures to prevent and minimize the condition.
A consolation prize in the Prevention section
“Throughout the conference, we listened to lectures from leading Odonto-Stomatology experts, who shared their experience and latest knowledge of new technology and products in the field,” said Tran Gia Bao, a member of the group that won second prize. “We’re thankful that we could test our strength and be motivated and inspired by highly experienced experts, to continue to love and be proud of our profession, bur know that we’ll need to keep working harder in the future.
“We were excited but nervous, this was the first time we had represented our university at such a large national conference. However, the encouragement, support, and enthusiastic guidance of our DTU Faculty of Odonto-Stomatology lecturers, and the Medical Simulation Center prepared us well. This award will give us the self-confidence we need for the journey ahead.”
