On June 1st, Times Higher Education announced the ranking of Asian universities in 2022. Accordingly, Ton Duc Thang University in HCM city ranked 73rd while Duy Tan University in Da Nang is listed 91st, which marks the first time ever that Vietnamese universities are included in the Asia top 100.
Vietnam has five universities ranked, which are:
- Ton Duc Thang University, ranked 73rd
- Duy Tan University, ranked 91st
- Vietnam National University (VNU) in Hanoi, placed in the 301–350 range;
- Vietnam National University in HCM City, 401–500; and
- Hanoi University of Science and Technology in the 500+ group.
Of the three Vietnamese universities ranked since 2021, only the Vietnam National University maintains its 401-500 ranking. The Hanoi National University dropped from the group of 251-300 to 301-350 and the Hanoi University of Science and Technology fell from the group of 351-400 to 500+.
The THE Asia University Rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions. The performance indicators are grouped into five areas:
- Research (30%);
- Citations (30%);
- Teaching (25%);
- Industry income (7.5%), and
- International outlook (7.5%);
With this assessment, universities with strengths in research have an advantage. Among the Vietnamese institutions:
- VNU achieved the highest score in the area of teaching with 22.3 points.
- Hanoi University of Science and Technology has the highest score of industry income with 43.3 points.
- Citation is the strength of Duy Tan University with 100 points.
This year's Asia University Rankings list nearly 616 higher education institutions from 31 Asian countries and territories, an increase of 65 schools compared to the previous year.
The top ten positions are:
1. Tsinghua University,
2. Beijing University,
3. National University of Singapore (NUS),
4. The University of Hong Kong (HKU),
5. Nanyang Technological University, Singapore,
6. The University of Tokyo
7. The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
8. Seoul National University,
9. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and
10. Fudan University.
In Southeast Asia, Singapore has two universities participating in the ranking, but both are at the top of the rankings, with the National University of Singapore third and Nanyang Technological University fifth. Compared to 2021, Malaysia overtook Thailand to become the country with most ranked universities at 18, Thailand has 17, Indonesia 14, Vietnam 5, the Philippines 2 and Brunei 1.
On April 28th THE released their Impact Rankings, which assess universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Seven Vietnamese education institutions were on the list:
- Duy Tan University (601-800),
- Hanoi University of Science and Technology (601-800),
- National Economics University (601-800)
- Ton Duc Thang University (601-800),
- Vietnam National University, Hanoi (ranked in the 601-800 range),
- FPT (801-1000)
- Phenikaa University (801-1000),
THE Impact Rankings assess universities against the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which call for global action to build a peaceful and prosperous society since it measures the contributions of educational institutions on social development and environmental protection.
