Participating in Youth Union activities to change himself to become a better person

When he was a student at Phan Chau Trinh High School, he used to be shy and quick-tempered. After becoming a medical student at the DTU Faculty of Medicine, Thanh An wanted to change himself to become a better person, so he volunteered in various activities held by the DTU Youth Union, such as “Green Sunday”, “Giving Strength to Students”, “Supporting Agent Orange Victims”, “The 2019 Congress of the Asia Pacific Society of Infection Control”, the “DTU Learning Express” community project in collaboration with Singapore Polytechnic and others.

Thanh An had the opportunity to travel to many places, to meet with many people and gain much interesting experience, and improve soft skills such as teamwork, communication, presentation, time management and plan development and implementation.

Studying is always a top priority

Despite spending much time on Youth Union activities, Thanh An has always achieved best academic performance. “I love doing sports; I’ve been injured many times and had been taken to hospital for treatment,” Thanh An explains. “When I was in hospital and saw the doctors hurrying around to examine and cure their patients. Being taken care of by them, I admired them a lot, and I hoped that someday I’d be like them. I’m aware that medicine is the very field related to people’s health and lives, such that you have to study really seriously to gain the knowledge. This is why, even though I’m very much into Union work, studying is always my first priority. To balance the two, I always make myself a detailed plan organizing and suitably balancing my time between all I have to do.”

In addition to attending class, Thanh An spends a lot of time studying at home. By following well-known doctors’ Facebook pages he can broaden his knowledge and experience through their posts. "I think medical students can acquire useful knowledge from specialized posts these experienced doctors share on social media," - Thanh An said.

Thanh An also actively participated in many medical seminars such as: The 2018 Parkway Hospital Conference, the 2019 VinUni Residency Program Workshop in Da Nang, the 2019 National conference on Endoscopy and Surgery in Vinh city, the 2019 Training sessions on the application of Medical Simulations in education held by DTU and the WISER Center in Pittsburgh, (USA), and the 24th Congress of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR 2019).
