Lecturer Nguyen Tien Viet, a DTU lecturer of Architecture, has a deep love of art, as well as his teaching. His biggest success in 2019 was a woodcut entitled “Fate”, which won a C prize at the 2019 Literature and Arts Awards, which are held annually by the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations National Committee to honor works in literature, folk arts, critical art theory, fine arts, photography, music, film, dance, theatre and architecture.

Lecturer Nguyen Tien Viet’s reduction woodcut was greatly appreciated. The image of a water buffalo depicted the everyday lives of Vietnamese farmers, with the tethered animal showing emotion in its eyes.
Lecturer Nguyen Tien Viet’s “Fate”
The woodcutting process involved careful work, as the printing technique requires relief carving and special printing paper. Lecturer Nguyen Tien Viet used a special knife to cut away the nonprinting surfaces of the planed woodblock. The protrusions were then smeared with paint and the image was printed, color by color. The variety of deep browns recalled the peacefulness of a Vietnamese countryside village, achieved by an ingenious combination of popular Vietnamese and Japanese woodcarving, providing art lovers with a special perception of a deep inner world.

In the near future, I want to share my reduction woodcutting skills and experience to teach a more multifaceted view on Art.”
