Many students choose major they should study at university based on emotion, Professor Ngo Bao Chau explained this to a meeting of DTU lecturers and students on April 24th.
A number of DTU students mentioned that, to succeed as a Professor, one must not only work hard but also study abroad at an early age. Many students and parents consider Vietnamese education to be second-rate.

Professor Chau said that Vietnamese education has potential, but has not yet reached the academic level of neighboring countries. One simple reason is that high school students do not receive proper guidance on which major they should study when entering university. Parents and students choose based on emotion, depending on which majors are fashionable or lead to lucrative careers. Students do not know what they want to do, what they are passionate about and quickly become bored. Professor Chau announced that there would be a career orientation club for high school students. Successful graduates in various business sectors would then encourage students to visit them, learn about different career paths and determine which one suits them best.
