We arrived in Danang on the 10th day of the new lunar year (February 6, 2017) to join the teaching of class EVR455D - which includes students of classes K19 and K20 - of the DTU Faculty of Environment and Chemical Engineering. Just like last time, we could feel the study dynamism of the students at this university.
Modeling software practice in the lab
Under the Faculty and the university’s plan for this term, two classes of students would follow the course of Environmental Modeling, divided in two parts (February and April 2017) to limit the number of students and to thus guarantee the output quality. That 10th day of the new lunar year was a rather nice day, still with a Lunar New Year feel in the air under the spring sunshine and temperatures a fresh 22 to 24°C - perfect for lecturing. Also like last time, we could notice the thoughtful attention of the Faculty and the university when arriving at Danang airport. Representatives of the Faculty picked us up and brought us to the guest lecturers’ accommodation right on campus. That evening, the first lesson took place with over two thirds of the class present. Profs. Anh and Vu (both former students at Envim) explained that, as it was the 10th day of the new lunar year, bus fares were still quite expensive, such that several of the students had not yet managed to return. Later classes were attended by over 95% of the registered students.

Mr Bui Ta Long and Dr Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong - Dean of the DTU Faculty of Environment and Chemical Engineering - wish everyone a happy Lunar New Year 2017
This year, Mr Bui Ta Long restructured the DTU program to be in line with university programs and to suit the different regions. The majority of the students here originate from provinces from Quang Binh to Binh Dinh - with those from Quang Nam, Danang, Quang Ngai, and Quang Binh most numerous -such that Envim created Wquiz application essay topics for the major rivers in the provinces central in the Central Vietnam region. To help the students have data, Envim edited the data groups separately for each province in the region, so as to be able to guide them from afar. During the course, Envim will introduce advanced courses for those students that choose to make their graduation papers or theses in this direction.
Working with the Faculty lecturers
In addition to the lecturing hours, Envim met and exchanged expertise with the leaders of the Faculty, to collaborate more closely in guiding students’ graduation papers. In practice, the group will guide from five to six students (three groups) to work under the directions of Envim. They will sign up with the Faculty, and the lecturers of the Faculty will make a selection. They will then go to Ho Chi Minh City for supplementary knowledge and to write their papers under the supervision of Envim. I should not fail to mention the impression our colleagues here left us when working with us on February 7. Dr Nguyen Thi Minh Phuong - Dean and expert in marine ecology management - showed us the newest results she obtained with her research group at DTU on the survey of the South China Sea marine environment acidification - particularly in Central Vietnam, which was recently affected by the Formosa incident. She explained how lucky they had been to have been part of recent sampling at many sensitive locations, with very impressive results, as were her words.
New Year’s smiles from DTU students
The course ends tomorrow, but the collaboration with the lecturers at the Faculty will go on - especially to train students in a comprehensive way, in which modeling and information technology are paramount and indispensable. We hope to have more work gatherings to strengthen the collaboration and the exchange between our training institutions.
